Watch: Saoirse Ronan Can Beat You in a Staring Contest in First Trailer for 'The Host'

As “The Hunger Games” broke box office records and the new trailer for “Breaking Dawn, Part II” hit theaters, Andrew Niccol’s “The Host,” based on the Stephenie Meyer novel, has rushed to ride the same wave, launching its marketing campaign with this strangely inchoate first trailer. The film doesn’t open until March 29, 2013 (!), which explains the stock-image feel of the teaser.

The novel is aimed at a slightly more adult audience than either “Twilight” or “The Hunger Games,” and takes place in a dystopian future of power-hungry, body-snatching aliens with bright blue eyes. Produced by Chockstone Pictures, the film is being released by AMC/Regal’s Open Road Films. Even with its Stephenie Meyer DNA, it’s unlikely that horrific “The Host” will do for Open Road what “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” have done for Summit-turned-Lionsgate.

Oh, god, no, why!? I miss the days when franchise fare was at least "decent" – Spider-Man, Batman, Shrek (1+2), POTC (1, maybe 2). Now we have franchises like Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Host. What, oh god what, is next!?

These are movies aimed at a dumbed-down, over-emotional and sexualized youth! Yah, the books encourage young kids (mostly girls, let's face it..) to read, but I would prefer that they not read at all than to have them think that this crap is "literature."
