If this weekend’s indie box-office taught us anything, it’s that action fans have no problem with subtitles.
Hot off the heels of the acclaimed Indonesian action-packed “The Raid: Redemption” doing stellar business in limited release, the trailer for France’s breathless action yarn “Sleepless Night has landed. If the preview’s anything to go by, this looks like one hell of a ride.
Directed by Frédéric Jardin, “Sleepless Night” centers on a seemingly corrupt cop Vincent (Tomer Sisley) whose attempt to steal a bag of coke leads to the kidnapping of his teenage son. This all occurs within the first few minutes; the rest of the film is one long extended action sequence that takes place in one crazy night.
“Jardin’s energizing action choreography includes multiple trips across a dense crowd of drunken clubgoers, leading Vincent at one point to bust a move to ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ in order to blend in and evade his enemies,” wrote Eric Kohn in his review after catching it at Fantastic Fest. “Jardin routinely uses the surrounding environment in inventive ways, including a scene in which Vincent slides across the kitchen floor on his back, dodging a pole-wielding assailant by opening up one drawer after another while the curious kitchen staff watches. Even the in-movie audience can’t look away.”
Warner Bros. was quick to snatch up US remake rights to the film. Be sure to check out the real deal when Tribeca Films opens it in theaters on May 11.
