F. Gary Gray Withdraws Name From "Captain America" Sequel Consideration To Helm NWA Biopic

Well, so much for that…

About a week ago, F. Gary Gray was on a short list of 3 directors (whittled down from an initial list of 10) being considered to helm the sequel to last year’s superhero blockbuster hit Captain America, with George Nolfi, and Anthony and Joseph Russo being the others.

I hoped he would get the job, given how much of an opportunity I felt it would be for him, to helm a mega-budgeted super-hero project; but I also felt that he was really the most experienced “action” film director on that short list… based solely on IMDB resumes.

But we don’t have to worry about anymore folks because, according to Deadline, he’s taken his name off the short list. Why? He’s apparenty in hot pursuit of the NWA biopic project, Straight Outta Compton – another one of those “in limbo” biopics I wrote about yesterday.

Last we wrote about it, Ice Cube said in an interview that it was definitely happening, but he didn’t reveal much detail. He did say they were on the hunt for a director. If Gray is in negotiations, then maybe the project has found its guy.

F. Gary Gray’s last big screen project was in 2009 with Law Abiding Citizen. Since then he’s attached to helm 3 or more different projects and none has materialized; would be great to see him back at work again.

Ice Cube and Matt Alvarez are producing the NWA project via Cube Vision, along with Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Woods.

So which is the greater opporunity do you think? Directing the Captain America sequel, or the NWA biopic?

1. Having worked with him before, it sounds like Cube (yeah that's what I call him) may have reached out to Gray to direct because he know Gray will do it real "proper like".

2. Like Jug said, CA 2 to may have been too wrought with studio oversight. Gray has been in Hollywood for a minute, he knows what it is or could be like.

3. Having said that, if my speculation is correct, and it's just my speculation, Cube & Gray will make sure it is a "proper like" film, but PLEASE no nepotism. Keep all that kids of the real men out of the pic in any major roles, please. As I've said to Neziah, the biggest problem I had with 'Notorious' was the casting.

Stay with Captain America. He would have went to another level…

Let's just hope it's not clogged up with inaccuracies like "Notorious".

F. Gary Gray's gonna be all right. I'm more worried about other black directors who allow themselves to be pigeonholed into directing "urban" films. I'm anticipating a film about a moment and/or movement in black history that's so well conceived and executed that we get to vie for a Best Picture Oscar about our American experience (like we should have with "Do the Right Thing").

Good for F. Gary Gray pulling his name from consideration. NWA is the better opportunity. Like Jug said, maybe not the bigger box office, but the better opportunity.

Depends. NWA-less cooks in the kitchen, more creative control but not a great outlook for Big B.O. CAPT.-if (& probably will) it hits you can get almost any look after, but you will be heavily scrutinized & it might turn into glorified traffic cop. Some headaches aren't worth the trouble to some folks, some are.
