Sorry, haters. HBO’s just announced that its fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” has been picked up for a third season by the network following record ratings and a 97% retention of the 3.9 million viewers who tuned into the April 1st season premiere.
The quote from Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming:
Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season – and then surpassed them. We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we’ve received for the series, and can’t wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season.
“Game of Thrones” may not offer the depth of social commentary of some of the network’s past signature programs, but it’s definitely great entertainment. Season three will presumably be based on “A Storm of Swords,” the third book in George R. R. Martin’s series. Pending some serious drop-off in interest in further seasons, Martin’s going to need to pick up the pace with his novels to avoid getting lapped by the show.
