A tweeter purporting to be Cannes Fest Director Thierry Fremaux tweeted (en francais) that Sean Penn is coming to Cannes, spurring buzz that his film, Ruben Fleischer’s “The Gangster Squad, in which he stars with Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Mireille Enos, Michael Pena, Anthony Mackie and Nick Nolte, might be added to the official fest selection. The Playlist checked with Fremaux, who confirmed that the star will be in Cannes, although we still do not know under what guise.
Warners bumped the movie from its original October release date in favor of Ben Affleck’s “Argo” (which is getting big advance Oscar buzz at CinemaCon); it might be in the studio’s interest to see how “Gangster Squad” plays for audiences and critics at Cannes.
Penn has been a fixture at the fest; he served on the jury in 2008 and showed two films in 2011, “The Tree of Life” and “This Must be the Place” (with a recut version still to be released–and hyped–by the Weinstein Co.) Harvey may want Penn there too. We shall soon see. Late additons to the schedule are not unusual, and this year’s program is light on big-studio fare.
