Oprah Talks OWN Trials: "If I Knew It Would Be This difficult, I Wouldn't Have Launched It"

This might be the first time I've watched Oprah Winfrey speak openly about the difficulties she'd experienced running her new network OWN. It's been primarily printed words until now (unless I just haven't been paying attention, which is certainly possible).

It's just rare to see her on the receiving end of an interview, and, as THR notes, it's even rarer to see her having to defend herself or professional ambitions, as she has had to in recent months, and does in the flesh below.

This was from her Monday morning appearance today, live on CBS This Morning.

the biggest thing for ME…so basic it's almost breathtaking in not having been taken into account…was that she didn't stipulate that the ridiculous, nondescript Discovery channel that OWN took over on the cable band BE MADE A BASIC CABLE CHANNEL. There were/are several things I would have liked to watch on own. But if I'm not choosing to pay EXTRA for HBO, Showtime and Starz there is now WAY i would pay for OWN. If/When they make it a Basic caple Tier channel I would totally revisit some programming

I just think Oprah has had her day. Nothing wrong with that. Does she really think EVERTYHING she does should work, and forever? It's trying when trying is futile that things really go down hill. For instance, begging people to watch, "espeically with Nielson boxs" for their TV's.

Blasphemy yawl! I know, men ain't suppose to cry, but y'all gonna make me act a fool up in here if you keep talking bad about Oprah. Besides, something is going to be missing when Oprah's huge presence is not involved in TV. I mean, who are all the hatin' black chicks, blog hosts and wannabe somebodies…. and pimp or die arm chair cynics going to hate on?

Y'all might not like Oprah's "style" but you cannot deny the truth. Oprah has given voice to more intelligent and artistic people of color than any person on this earth. The list numbers in the thousands. From black politicians, black authors, black musical geniuses, black business owners, heads of foreign states, prominent black lawyers, doctors, chiefs, cooks and bottle washers, Oprah has been the driving force in exposing them to the world. Oh, should I mention her unmatched effort to highlight the ever-present struggles of the black female. Not to mention her nearly 1/2 billion dollars she's given to the needy. Yeah, I've said this before, but if it was right then, it's surely apropos now. Look, you may not like Oprah because of her fortune and fame, and you may not like her interviewing style, and I understand that, however, does that diminish her overall accomplishments? Well, I'm just asking because I know it does not. I also know some people are constitutionally incapable of seeing the truth, even when it smacks them in their dumb black faces. And again, the truth does not lie. Listen, so many times and in so many ways, I've said Oprah Winfrey is probably the greatest black woman that has ever walked this earth. I say that because "GREAT" is reserved for those that far exceed the accomplishments of others and spreads their "wealth" and "knowledge" along the way. Greatness is reserved for those that break through the glass ceiling and then puts that white ceiling in the basement. Greatness is reserved for those that have the courage and wisdom to withstand attacks from the front & the back, from the rich & the poor, from BLACKS & WHITES. Great is reaching back to give back. Greatness is reaching back to a land that most blacks could call home. Some call it the motherland. And look at it like this. Although money is not the road to happiness, it's great that Oprah has given hundreds of millions of her dollars to causes that nobody else dared to attack or even mention. Great is a person that can win the approval of others in spite of their skin color. Oprah stands alone in her greatness. Lastly, although many women have done great things, those accomplishments pale in comparison to those of Oprah Winfrey's. You may not agree, but I'd love to know why? And oh, I watched her (again) in The Color Purple last night. That woman can do it all! I wonder if she can cook? I bet she can!

How much more of Discovery Channels money is she going to be allowed to waste before they pull the plug on this fiasco? Oprah's time has come and long gone. She speaks as if what she thinks or says is important and her cretin fans hung on her every false word. Her fans base has been dwindling for a long long long time. Let this be the end of seing her on TV. Discovery channel, please let her network die. It's long overdue.

Oprah is really a truly inspiring being. And OWN has a lot of potential to really change the Cable television landscape. I'll always be a fan and supporter.

Wow. I was a little disappointed that she said she wouldn't have done it if she knew it was going to be this hard but I'm glad she said she won't quit

oh yes tambay, you are so cool, and so hip, and have such a personal life that you don't realize when Oprah gives you a chance to villianize her.
