Robert Rodriguez Gets His Gringo, Mel Gibson Joins ‘Machete Kills’

Robert Rodriguez Gets His Gringo, Mel Gibson Joins 'Machete Kills'

We presume Robert Rodriguez didn’t keep him waiting around for the script (ZING). Just over a week since it was reported that Rodriguez wanted Mel Gibson for a role in “Machete Kills,” it looks like he got him.

Deadline reports that Gibson “is in” for a part in the upcoming sequel, which should briefly distract from the controversy about the whole Joe Eszterhas/still-an-anti-Semite/probably-needs-a-therapist/should-stay-on-the-pills controversy that flared up (again) earlier this month. It’s also a nice way for Gibson to remind everyone that his upcoming, old school flavored action vehicle “Get The Gringo” is going to VOD next month. Maybe this will all build to remind people that Gibson is still a great entertainer? Maybe. At least until he yells at someone next. But he surely isn’t wasting time in trying to rehab his image.

No word yet on what role he’ll play in the tale that will find Danny Trejo hired by the U.S. government to head into Mexico to take down a cartel leader and madman billionaire who plan to launch a weapon into space. Also no word if Rodriguez has managed to lure Michelle Williams, who he also wants for a role, but it does look like Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez are back as well. And while Gibson is an interesting get for the movie, don’t expect it to change the box office. Audiences didn’t care when “The Beaver” was released under similar conditions, and we’re guessing his role will be a small one.

Either way, expect The Wrap to have a comment from Eszterhas about this casting soon as part of their non-stop, 24/7 Mel Gibson coverage.

Good for Robert Rodriquez a brilliant move! It will cause a buzz about the film and
"All publicity, is good publicity!" The film will probably double it's previous ticket sales
by all the fans of action films and those that will go to hopefully see a train wreck
of a actor! I think they will be disappointed. Mel Gibson's problem is not that he can't
act but it's (IMHO) because he has never had anyone confront him about his
insane ideas about Jews and Women over the years. In this A$$-Ki$$ing Hollywood no
one has ever had the Guts to confront him about these issues for fear of being thrown off
the "Gravy Train". I do feel sorry for the people that want to see his career end as that
reminds me of the Women that was about to be stoned for Adultery. Jesus said "Anyone
who has not sinned, through the first stone!" Mel Gibson needs help, that's for sure, but
to see the hate generated against him is out of proportion with his ignorant ideas. Why
isn't anyone more interested in seeing Roman Polanski prosecuted for his "Real Crimes"
against an underage girl? Think about it? As stupid as Mr. Gibson's comments are; he
didn't commit any crime against the anyone and I hope he never does? In this country
we have the right to express our opinions no matter how stupid they are! Don't wish him
Bad, Wish him to get the help he so "desperately" needs.

Excellent! Love watching this guy at the movies – a million times better than the bland little boys in most action flicks today. And kudos to Rodriguez for recognizing that and not being afraid of doing his own thing.

My money is on Gibson playing the cartel bad guy covered in bronzer and using a Speedy Gonzales accent like Michael Parks did in Kill Bill v.2.

Apparently, he's in talks for a role in Sin City 2 as well
