In the so-called “specialty box office” category… another film that also opened this weekend to strong numbers was Magnolia Pictures’s Kevin Macdonald-directed Bob Marley documentary, titled, simply, Marley – a film we’ve given lots of coverage to on S&A.
The film opened on 42 screens and managed a weekend take of $260,000, averaging over $6,100 per screen, one of the top 5 highest averages this weekend.
According to Magnolia Pictures’ prez, Eamonn Bowles, the doc was number 1 “in all but a handful of complexes and usually by multiples over the next highest film… which is great news for expanding in the next couple of weeks. In addition, we were the number six film in all iTunes on Friday, which bodes extremely well for the digital and VOD platforms. This looks to be an extremely profitable film for us.”
And in case you’ve forgotten, Magnolia released the film simultaneously in theaters AND digital/VOD platforms. So even if you don’t live anywhere close to any of the 42 theater screens the film is currently screening, you can still watch it by renting it via iTunes, for example. Although it looks like it’ll expand to more cities in coming weekends.
Also worth noting is CodeBlack Entertainment’s Woman Thou Art Loosed: On The 7th Day, which added 4 more screens to last week’s numbers, to make it 106; however, it tumbled, dropping about 82% from last week’s strong $650,000 opening, earning roughly $111,000 this weekend, bringing its cume to $889,000.
I think it’s safe to say that Think Like A Man likely had something to do with that. However, as you’ll recall from my conversation with CodeBlack CEO Jeff Clanagan last weekend, his plan was to hold the number of screens this weekend, expecting Think Like A Man to be the big story, and then look to expand further next weekend.
It probably won’t do the same kind of numbers that Laugh At My Pain (CodeBlack’s last release) did, which got off to a much stronger start during the first 3 weeks it was in release, but let’s see where it eventually ends up.
