More and more films premiere on Video on Demand — if they don’t simply bypass a theatrical release altogether. Because VOD reviews are often scarce and hard to find, Criticwire created VODetails, a recurring column to help you figure out whether a new VOD release is worth your hard-earned dollar. This time we’re looking at “Sleepless Night,” a French action thriller about a man on the run from angry drug dealers inside a posh nightclub. To set the mood, I wrote this post at 1:15 in the morning after drinking two glasses of Coke Zero.
Director: Frédéric Jardin
Cast: Tomer Sisley, Serge Riaboukine, Julien Boisselier
Official Synopsis: “‘Sleepless Night’ tells the story of Vincent, a respected and dedicated police officer – or so it seems. After he and a colleague are recognized while stealing a massive bag of cocaine from drug dealers employed by local mob boss Marciano, Vincent quickly finds himself trapped in a situation that no parent would envy: his son has been kidnapped with the promise of execution if he doesn’t immediately deliver the bag back to its rightful owner. Vincent heads to Marciano’s nightclub on the outskirts of Paris to make the swap, but competing interests and misplaced loyalties soon threaten to complicate the exchange. The ensuing game of cat-and-mouse quickly spirals into madness, sprawling across every seedy back room and pulsating, claustrophobic inch of the crowded dance floor. With enemies on all sides and time working against him, the night to come might not only be the longest but also the last of Vincent and his young son’s life.”
“A complete and satisfying package that will make genre aficionados and general audience alike, stand up and take notice.”
“If tense, exciting action that is logical, economical and incredibly well-done is your thing (and why wouldn’t it be?) you are going to love ‘Sleepless Night.'”
“Despite the ongoing momentum, ‘Sleepless Night’ never loses touch with its story.”
“‘Sleepless Night’ doesn’t re-write the action-thriller genre and it doesn’t bother with deep characterization or set up complex emotional relationships. It’s about the chase and never letting fatigue set in.”
“Although it’s not always fast enough for one to look past its moving pieces, ‘Sleepless Night’ is still an entertaining thriller that moves like clockwork.
“Sleepless Night” is now available on VOD. It opens in New York and Austin, Texas on May 11. Also: it is really, really good.
