We’ve long passed the point where Luc Besson’s name attached to a thriller could get us excited, and we suspect that “Lockout” won’t be the film that causes us to reconsider that particular standpoint. Starring Guy Pearce as a wrongly accused convict, and Maggie Grace as the President’s daughter who gets kidnapped (AGAIN!!!), Pearce must free Grace from a futuristic space prison that has been overrun by the inmates if he is to clear his name.
So then, who wants a closer look at this load of derivative nonsense? The first clip is AMAZING. It sees Pearce’s Snow (seriously, that’s the character’s name) give Grace’s Emilie Warnock (we have nothing snarky to say about this name) a charming new haircut, before socking her in the chin good and proper. The second clip shows Grace (pre-haircut and chin socking) being attacked by Joe Gilgun (“This Is England,” “Misfits”) who then pushes a button he shouldn’t and gives us a glimpse at some CGI havoc.
As ridiculous as this one sounds, we can’t help but feel this could be a bit of fun. The problem with “Taken” (and apologies if you like “Taken,” but you really shouldn’t) was that it took itself far too seriously and was coupled with a casual bit of racism. This looks like it’s taking that concept, putting it in space, and acknowledging how silly it is. Plus, we’re fans of Joe Gilgun, so we’ll definitely check this out at some point (although maybe we’ll just wait for the DVD). “Lockout” hits cinemas on April 13th. [Twitch]
