Aaron Sorkin's been nominated for one Oscar ("Moneyball") and won another ("The Social Network") in the years since the demise of the misfire that was "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip." And now here's "The Newsroom," which premieres June 24th on HBO, marking his return to the small screen and, at least from the looks of the trailer below, he's in fine form.
"The Newsroom" stars Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy, a cable news anchor who has a breakdown in the middle of a college talk ("I want a human moment from you," the moderator presses) and actually says — saints forbid — what's on his mind.
Workplaces being what Sorkin has always loved and done best, the series will be focused on McAvoy's news show in the wake of the event, with Emily Mortimer playing Donna Moss to his Josh Lyman/Dana Whitaker to his Casey McCall. Sam Waterston, John Gallagher Jr., Alison Pill, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski and Olivia Munn round out the cast.
