‘A Cat in Paris’ Aims for Families with New English Language Cast: Harden, Huston, Modine, Blum

'A Cat in Paris' Aims for Families with New English Language Cast: Harden, Huston, Modine, Blum

Some of the best animation in the world comes from overseas, but that doesn’t mean mainstream family audiences flock to see it. Disney/Pixar John Lasseter has been trying to build an audience beyond the art house for years for the great Hayao Miyazaki, nominated for two Oscars and winner for “Spirited Away.”

So GKIDS is releasing a new English-language version of last year’s French cat burglar caper “A Cat in Paris,” starring Marcia Gay Harden, Anjelica Huston, Matthew Modine and Steve Blum. The stlyish Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol family film was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2012, along with GKIDS’ jazzy “Chigo & Rita”; their Celtic fable “Secret of Kells” was nominated in 2010. “A Cat in Paris” hits theaters on June 1.

The French trailer is below.

In response. I saw only the French version of this movie with English subtitles, however in the UK, where that earlier dub did get a release, the "Time Out" reviewer declared that "the English voices which replace the French originals are torturously ill-matched."

"Has been described as Hitchcock for middle-schoolers" reports Andre Pulver of the UK Guardian ( April 6, 2012)

An English version of this film was already in circulation at film festivals. Seems silly to re-dub such a fabulous film.

It's time this clever, smart, and totally charming French Oscar contender found a wider audience.
