Cannes 2012: Marlon Wayans' Directorial Debut, Co-Starring Essence Atkins, Looking For A USA Home

Announced on this site in early February… Essence Atkins and Marlon Wayans star in the indie comedy/spoof titled Smart Ass, which is decribed as a spoof of all those found-footage flicks that have been released quite a bit in recent years.

Marlon Wayans directed what should be his feature film directorial debut.

Today brings word that sales and distribution company IM Global is currently at the Cannes film market with a slate of films (includsing Smart Ass) securing USA and international deals for some of them.

Screen Daily reports from Cannes that while Smart Ass hasn't been dealt yet, the R-rated spoof is expected to find a US home within days.

IM Global president of international sales Jonathan Deckter and the team expect a torrent of interest on a roster that includes Gold Circle’s supernatural thriller The Possession Of Michael King from first-time director David Jung and the thriller Chained from the producers of the Saw franchise starring Ryan Phillipe.

Marlon Wayans co-directed Untitled Found Footage Comedy with Mike Tiddes and the R-rated spoof is expected to find a US home within days.

The Wayans have certainly done well with these spoofs, from Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, to the Scary Movie franchise, to, most recently, Dance Flick, which both Wayans and Atkins worked on.

They certainly weren't all box office hits, but overall, they've done fairly well; some even cracking the $100 million mark.

And I guess it was only a matter of time before those found-footage flicks were parodied.

The Wayans men ARE good with spoofs, so I guess this is a matter of, "Dance with who 'brung' ya…"
