Cannes 2012 Preview: Michel Gondry's Coming-of-Age, Sci-Fi Tale "The We and The I"

Continuing with our coverage of the Cannes Film Festival; The We and The I will open the Directors’ Fortnight section of the festival this month..

Here’s a departure from the usual dreamlike, whimsical themes of Michel Gondry‘s films like Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep and Be Kind Rewind. It’s been called Gondry’s most realistic film yet. The film stars Joe Mele, Meghan Murphy and Alex Barrios.

The We and The I, penned by Gondry, Jeffrey Grimshaw and Paul Proch and filmed in the Bronx, revolves around a group of high school kids riding back home on the bus while celebrating their last day of school. But there’s a sci-fi twist to the story. Gondry confirmed with The Playlist last year that the school kids, “travel into the future by mistake and discover a machine that keeps people younger.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

The We and the I is the heartfelt and comical story of the final bus ride home for a group of young high school students and graduates. As kids depart the bus for the last time, we get to learn about these graduates as they step into the world – their love, their conflicts, their despair and their hope.

Hmm.. there’s no indication however of a sci-fi element going by this synopsis or the trailer. Mars Distribution (To Rome with Love) will be handling the film’s release in France.

Michel Gondry is currently shooting the upcoming adaptation of the late French author Boris Vian’s sci-fi/fantasy novel Mood Indigo which stars Omar Sy, Audrey Tatou and Romain Duris.

I think It's a mistake, you talk about another project :

Skins: Generation Bronx, with a sci-fi twist. A winning formula. I'm a fan already.

This is certainly a change for Gondry. I wonder what drew him to the story. Maybe the Sci-fi aspects are shown more in the film. I kind imagine that even if the visuals of the film are not dreamlike, Gondry might enjoy working with an unusual plot. Also since the Sci-fi elements are ignored in the trailer could they be pulling a bait and switch on kids for some reason? In any case I'm a huge Gondry fan and will check this film out.

looks great!

How did this movie get into Cannes but my movie, "Fried Chicken In Outer Space" was rebuked??

other song

this looks boring and childish as f*ck, coming from someone who LOVES Eternal Sunshine. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Hmm, "Attack The Block" comes to mind a bit, no? Did Gondry get up on [brown kids in the hood/sci fi genre] prior to ATB's wicked fest run or after their 2011 SXSW heat?! Sounds fun either way. I'll go see anything 'shot in' or about 'Bronx natives'.
