Music Box Films isn't missing a trick. Having been the only distributor sharp enough to acquire the three-part edited-for-movies version of the original "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series, the distributor is now releasing in theaters the first episode of the second season of the original Swedish "Wallander" TV series. (The first season (2005-2006) was also released theatrically as a trilogy overseas.)
Based on original stories from popular Swedish crime writer Henning Mankell, "Wallander" follows a chief inspector investigating crimes and mysteries in the deceptively dark underbelly of modern Sweden (trailer posted below). Krister Henriksson plays the titular chief.
In the first 90-minute episode of the second series (2008-2010), "The Revenge," chief inspector Wallander has achieved his life’s dream—buying a house by the sea. His moment of quietude is disrupted by a heavy explosion. His small town begins to look like a war zone and Wallander must figure out whether this is sabotage or terrorism. Music Box will open “The Revenge” in select theaters on May 25th.
Thirteen "Wallander" 90-minute Season Two episodes, including “The Revenge,” “The Guilt,” “The Courier” and “The Thief" will be available on VOD and DVD starting May 29, 2012.
Rising star Tom Hiddleston plays Magnus Martinsson in the BBC detective drama; Hiddleston is fresh off his turn as Loki in “Marvel’s The Avengers.” Our interviews with Branagh here and Hiddleston are here; both actors talk filming “Wallander.”
