Malin Akerman To Play Blondie Singer Debbie Harry In 'CBGB'

It seems Malin Akerman is impressing all the right people with her pipes. The actress will be showing the world her take on Foreigner‘s “I Want To Know What Love Is” in the upcoming “Rock Of Ages,” and she’s graduating from that ’80s neon-colored musical to something a bit grimier, but no less musical.

Akerman is set to take on music legend, style icon and all around badass Debbie Harry in “CBGB.” Before Blondie blew up on the charts, they could be found haunting New York City’s famed punk clubs Max’s Kansas City and, yes, CBGB. Akerman joins a cast as eclectic as the patrons of the famed music venue, with Alan Rickman playing the club’s owner Hilly Kristal, and Rupert Grint (of all people) as Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome. We’re really curious to see who’s gonna play David Byrne….

Anyway, we wonder how the music rights — or just how much music at all — will be featured, but this one has been developing for a couple of years now, so we figured the filmmakers have a pretty good handle on what they’re aiming for. The pair behind “Bottle Shock” — Jody Savin and Randall Miller — are putting this together with the former directing and the latter co-writing. Cameras will roll next month on the pic, and it will be interesting to see how this turns out. But until then, here’s an excuse to watch this pretty fascinating short doc on how “Heart Of Glass” was produced. Music junkies should make this a must see. [Variety]

"….and Rupert Grint (of all people)…" Good question Mana. Why 'of all people'? Do I detect some film snobbery? While hardly a standout in the business, Grint is probably the only one of the Potter kids with a bit of natural acting ability, although his face doesn't 'fit' the Hollywood prototype. I suggest leaving the snide remarks until AFTER you've seen how he does in the movie, if that's not too much trouble for you.

"Rupert Grint (of all people)" was this because he has nothings to do with Music? Anyway it sounds really exciting
