What must Robert Redford be thinking? On his last film, “The Conspirator,” the famous liberal film pioneer partnered with Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts to bring the story of the assassination plot against Abraham Lincoln and the subsequent court hearings to the big screen. At the Toronto International Film Festival premiere, Redford gave his biggest thanks of the evening to Ricketts: “None of this would have been possible without the support, spiritually and financially, from Joe Ricketts,” he said. But now Rickets, the New York Times is reporting, is behind a major plan to bring down President Obama with a racist media blitz.
According to the Times, the plan is titled “The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama: The Ricketts Plan to End His Spending for Good.”
“Our plan is to do exactly what John McCain would not let us do,” the proposal states. “Show the world how Barack Obama’s opinions of America and the world were formed. And why the influence of that misguided mentor [Jeremiah Wright] and our president’s formative years among left-wing intellectuals has brought our country to its knees.”
“The plan is designed for maximum impact, far beyond a typical $10 million television advertising campaign,” reports the Times. “It calls for full-page newspaper advertisements featuring a comment Mr. Wright made the Sunday after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. ‘America’s chickens are coming home to roost,’ he said.”
Strangely, “The Conspirator” comes across as a somewhat progressive film in its depiction of a country concerned with internal subversion and military tribunals whose constitutionality and fairness is debated.
But the recent news suggests that Ricketts politics are far from Redford’s. I wonder who in Hollywood will direct Ricketts’ next historical story. Maybe Tea Party filmmaker Stephen Bannon.
