If it weren’t for the vocal fans who’ve decided that you can only like one of “The Avengers” or “The Dark Knight Rises,” not both, as if they were football teams or opposite sides of civil war, we’d have almost forgotten about the closing part of Christopher Nolan‘s Bat-trilogy. As Joss Whedon’s film becomes the top-grossing superhero movie of all, Nolan’s has been playing the softly-softly-catchee-monkey approach to its marketing: that trailer a few weeks back made many waves, but ‘quiet confidence’ is perhaps the most appropriate way to describe Nolan and Warner Bros‘ approach to marketing their mega-budget series-closer.
Of course, we are still two months out from seeing the film, and the campaign is likely only gearing up. Indeed, we’re going to be seeing Mountain Dew cans with the film all over them, even, and now Warners have debuted what’s likely to be the main poster for the final stages leading up to release on the film’s Facebook page. And it’s very much of a piece with artwork from the earlier films: as with the early teaser artwork, a formula is being followed, with a color coded take on Mr. Wayne and his symbol that matches neatly up with posters for “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight.” So graphic design students might be a little disappointed, but we’ve got no problems with it, really. But then we only care so much about posters. “The Dark Knight Rises,” of course, hits theaters on July 20th. See the poster in full below.
