Trailer Watch: Anne Hathaway Sings Us Through the First Trailer of Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables"

The first trailer for Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables” adaptation premiered Wednesday morning, giving us a first look and listen to a slew of movie stars in the 19th-century period musical. Although it’s just Anne Hathaway singing in this first trailer (some of this footage was screened at CinemaCon last month), we see glimpses of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, and Eddie Redmayne – all of whom manage to look emotional, pensive– and miserable indeed.

The Oscar-winning director of “The Kings Speech” uses the work from the stage musical by Boublil and Schonberg, adapted from Victor Hugo’s 1862 original novel, which detailed decades of struggle in 19th-century France. In the story, ex-prisoner Jean Valjean (Jackman), hunted for decades by brutal policeman Javert (Crowe), agrees to take charge of a young daughter (Seyfriend) of a desolate factory worker (Hathaway) and faces the consequences.  “Les Miserables” premieres in theaters on Dec. 14.
