Warner Bros. Lines Up Top Secret Sci-Fi Movie 'The Wind' From Screenwriter David Koepp & Director Nic Mathieu

Warner Bros. has a healthy amount of sci-fi projects brewing, with the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer‘s “Cloud Atlasopening December 6th and Guillermo del Toro‘s “Pacific Rim” and Alfonso Cuaron‘s “Gravity” opening in 2013. Not much has been revealed about any of the films so far — “Cloud Atlas” will somehow condense David Mitchell‘s multi-storyline, epic novel into three hours, “Pacific Rim” will see humans fight monsters and “Gravity” will see Sandra Bullock trapped in space (literally) — but there’s even less known about Warners’ latest sci-fi endeavor.

Titled “The Wind,” all that’s known is that it will be set in a space colony, so that means….the title’s ironic? Whatever it’s about, screenwriter David Koepp, who worked most recently on “Men in Black III” and either wrote or co-wrote movies like “Jurassic Park,” “Mission: Impossible” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (but don’t hold that last one against him), wrote the script and will help produce the film, which is being kept uber-secret by the studio.

Part of what convinced the studio to move forward with “The Wind,” is the presentation put together by first-time helmer Nic Mathieu, who has worked almost exclusively in commercials thus far, particularly those that use a heavy amount of CG. Warners insiders told THR that Mathieu has a “strong point of view as a filmmaker,” which will probably come in handy for whatever the story is for “The Wind.” Mathieu has also reportedly been “wowing execs in the commercials world” with his spots, particularly his the 2004 Super Bowl spot for Cadillac, which can be seen below. Admittedly, the commercial does look impressive, and has us wanting to drive a Cadillac to a space colony as soon as we can.

The above post speaks to everything that's wrong with big budget movies. That ad is just an sfx showcase – it doesn't tell a story and the concept has no bearing on the product. There's no sense of storytelling, ingenuity, or insight into anything other than the director's idea of something that looks 'cool' onscreen, transposed onto any old product. It gives no indication that the director can tell a story, simply that he can shoot something that makes lunkheads go 'cooooool'.


Warner also have the Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending in development.
