Watch: Trailer For Ben Affleck's '70s Set Thriller 'Argo'

So, Ben Affleck has made a movie about making a movie. Kind of. Part period drama, part thriller, part comedy, and all based on a wild true story, there are a lot of elements at play in “Argo.” With the first trailer now landing, it looks like yet another solid flick from the actor turned director.

Based on the fascinating, must-read Wired article “How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran,” “Argo” centers on the real-life C.I.A. plan to rescue a group of diplomats from Tehran after the 1979 Iranian revolution by claiming they’re part of a Hollywood movie crew shooting a film. Indeed, the tale could easily be played for laughs — and to be certain, there is an element of absurdity to it all — but Affleck seems to have struck the right balance between how surreal and very dangerous the operation is. It certainly doesn’t hurt that he’s lined up an insanely talented cast to back him up, with Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, Taylor Schilling and more rounding out the extensive ensemble. All told, it looks like another winner from Affleck.

Could Oscar be in the works for the film? It’s a helluva competitive year, but with an October 12th date, you can bet Warner Bros. has that goal in mind. Watch below. [via The Film Stage]

The worst part of the trailer is Ben Affleck's acting. He should have let somebody else star.

I was a little thrown by all the comedy in the beginning, but once Steven Tyler kisked in, things got serious. Still, I'm not sure this will be as commercial as Affleck's first two films.

I thought it was an excellent trailer. Looks quite good.

Yeah, this looks good. Affleck's a solid director.

Going by that trailer i have no idea what this film is about. Have no idea what your average movie-goer is going think of this, i think it's going to be a tough sell despite a starry cast. I wish he had directed that other movie he was up for instead of this.

Maybe it's a testament to that song never getting old, or just the idea of John Goodman, Kyle Chandler, Alan Arkin, and Bryan Cranston all getting screen time, but I'm in.

Not nearly enough Kyle Chandler in that trailer.

Pretty terrible trailer tbh.

A little wag the dog-ish.
