Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron opened in the US and in number of overseas countries this past weekend. It grossed $56.3 million in the US, and $35 million overseas totalling $95 million. It has a way to go to making back its $170 million budget, but it outperformed studio expectations by at least $10 million dollars.
The good news about this film is that it had almost an even split between men and women – males moviegoers made up 47% of the US ticket buyers. The film also had an older audience — 52% was over 30. This goes to show that men will see films that star women just as long as they think they are going to have a good time and get some action scenes. Interestingly, it took men less time to get to the theatre to see Snow White than it did to see The Hunger Games which started out heavily skewed female and then shifted as positive word of mouth spread.
Charlize's other big movie Prometheus beat out Snow White at the box office in the UK where it opened last weekend. Prometheus took in $35 million as it rolled out overseas. The film opens in the US this Friday.
It's pretty cool that Charlize Theron stars in two big budget summer action movies. Her box office cred just went way up.
