David Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis’ Starring Robert Pattinson Hits U.S. Theaters On August 17th

David Cronenberg's 'Cosmopolis' Starring Robert Pattinson Hits U.S. Theaters On August 17th

Fresh from its red carpet premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, word was mixed to positive for David Cronenberg‘s “Cosmopolis,” his suddenly of-the-moment adaptation of Don DeLillo‘s acclaimed novel featuring a pretty good leading turn by Robert Pattinson. The film opens in Canada this weekend and the U.K. next week, but don’t worry U.S. fans, you won’t have to wait too long.

eOne has set an August 17th release for the movie that will certainly be quite different from your standard summer fare. While our man in Cannes gave the film a glowing review, in particular noting that fans of the book will be pleased, this writer caught the movie this week and has some words of caution. If you haven’t read DeLillo’s novel, “Cosmopolis” can be a slog, and it’s not aided by the lousy production values either (the film looks pretty ugly, not helped by the shoddy digital camera work). Shot in Toronto, barely any effort was made to disguise the locations that are supposed to pass for New York City. But if Cronenberg fans thought the much better (and underrated) “A Dangerous Method” was too talky, they ain’t seen nothing yet.

Cronenberg doesn’t make much of an effort to try to break up the story that is set mostly inside a limousine and the result is a film that becomes maddeningly static. Add to that lots of obtuse, severely mannered dialogue about the economy and sex and you have a film that moves at a snail’s pace to a payoff that is telegraphed a mile out, but doesn’t feel all that rewarding for the journey to get there. The gallery of supporting cast members are only in the movie for brief scenes except Paul Giamatti, who gets an extended sequence that unfortunately highlights the film’s main shortcoming: it feels like watching a bunch of people recording an audiobook.

But hey, give it a shot yourself when it opens on August 17th in New York and L.A. (it will expand to more cities in the weeks following). If anything, it’ll be a way to get out of the heat. [IndieWire]

I'm not defending this article, but according to Robert Pattinson himself, he was really confused when he was reading Cosmopolis' script…

We need to talk about Kevin?

Seriously, enough with the Twi-hard crap. I like the actor, detest the franchise. Probably as much as Rob does.

No one is gonna be falling asleep in this film, Kevin! You jealous much because of all of the support Rob is getting and Deserves!!?? We are glad Rob did this movie and he will get excellent reviews and so will the movie. It already is! You are so out of the loop, you wouldn't know a great movie if it slapped you. Kevin go get another job because you do not know how to give opinions! Yours are untrue. Ahhh, finally, needed to do this.

Kevin, kevin finally I get to critique an opinionated person!! First of all it is getting great reviews from what I am hearing!! I saw the long version of the trailor, It's gonna be a great different movie! Not sloppy at all! I know Liam is telling the truth! It's gonna be a wild and fun ride, this movie! You need to respect people more. You must of been watching a different movie! This is gonna be a very slick film and unique. I cannot wait to see this awesome movie! Show respect! Had enough of people like you.

Mr Jagernauth

With respect, your opinion about Cosmopolis is your own business, but your observations about locational sloppiness and production are way off base.

I should know. I worked on production for the film. If anything Cosmopolis' sets and finish are far slicker than many of the releases out there at the moment. So, if you want to dump on it, at least do it for the right reasons and know what you'r talking about.

Critics gave good reviews to the movie, mostly in Cannes was the movie that had the most buzz and criticism to robert pattinson in general were excellent, so that people who enjoy the art of cinema, I recommend going to see the movie, I was able to see it in italy, is a film different from the others, not a commercial film is pure art and the cast is wonderful and robert pattinson was excellent as eric parker.

If I wanted to read the review, I'd read the review.

Holy shit, Twihard fans. Can you not read? I said yr beloved RPATZ has a "pretty good leading turn." He's fine, the movie is balls. Sorry. Can't wait for all you to fall asleep watching this as you dream about having his babies.

KEVIN JAGERNAUTH, stop hating on Pattinson and telling the same things on and on. It's pretty obvious, you are too dumb to understand things like Cosmopolis. Get back to American Pie and Transformers.

False, I'm a fan of Cronenberg and I've watched Robert Pattinson fans have supported this film especially on social networks. They really appreciate Cronenberg and are happy that Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson will be working again in the future

Even Variety, Telegraph, EmpireOnline, Timeout, Anne Thomson heyuguys, filmoria, and many other film critics liked the film and the performance of Paul Giamanti and Pattinson, plus they are not twihards.
