Discuss: As Michael Fassbender Shows Off His Pipes, Should Martin Scorsese Cast Him As Frank Sinatra?

People are celebrating the release of glam metal musical "Rock of Ages" this weekend in a number of ways: booking their opening night tickets, throwing Stacee Jaxx-themed parties, or sealing themselves in an underground bunker until it passes like Michael Shannon in "Take Shelter." Michael Fassbender, who's currently the toast of the town thanks to his excellent performance in "Prometheus," is celebrating in a different way.

Well, that's not quite true. We suspect the Irish-German actor is indifferent about Adam Shankman's film. But our pals at Pajiba dug up a compilation video put together by a fan, of various moments during press tours, talk show appearances, and on set, where Mr. Fassbender has decided to show off his singing voice. And it's one of the most charming things you'll see on the Internet today, with Fassbender again displaying why he has the potential to become a genuine megastar.

But perhaps more seriously, it suggests that someone should cast him in a musical, and do it fast. While films like "Rock of Ages" cast up with actors who, if they're lucky, can just about hold a tune (or not all), right here is someone who can sing, but also do so across a variety of genres — we hear him do snippets of rock 'n' roll, jazz standards, folk songs and more, and he acquits himself nicely in all of them. We suspect that the actor would shy away from something like "Rock of Ages," given the care with which he makes his choices, but if someone was gearing up to make "Guys 'n' Dolls?" Or "Carousel?" Or "Company?" We think we might have found your lead.

And then another thought occurred, as he takes on Frank Sinatra's "Summer Wind" — wasn't Martin Scorsese meant to be doing a Sinatra biopic at some point? He's long been working on the project, and last year super-producer Scott Rudin came on, with Marty saying only a couple of months ago that he was meeting with new writers to tackle the script previously penned by Phil Alden Robinson ("Field Of Dreams"). And while it's long been thought that he was intending to cast Leonardo DiCaprio as the legendary singer, the director said at the time that he hadn't made any decisions, and might even go with an unknown.

But it's hard to watch Fassbender sing "Summer Wind" (especially at the 1:34 mark) and suggest that he doesn't have the voice down (although Scorsese has suggested he'd use the singer's voice dubbed onto the actor for the vocal performance), and we sort of feel he'd be perfect for the part. They're not immediately identical, looks wise — he's a few inches taller, and a little more angular, than Frank was. But there's certainly something there, not least those ol' blue eyes…

Scorsese's not going to be making his Sinatra movie for a little while, with "Wolf Of Wall Street" up next, and a handful of possibilties to go next including the forever-gestating "Silence" and "The Snowman." But he has had discussions with Fassbender about something, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and we think Sinatra could certainly be a possibility, should the script ever come together. But what do you think? Are you in the Fassbender For Frank camp? Would you rather see Leo take on the role? Or someone else entirely? Weigh in below.

Tickle Me

Michael Fassbender got back together with the girl he beat up. To make a long story short that shows he's guilty. He paid her off and paid her hospital bills it is public court records. If he cooperated or made a comment, WELL exactly where is that information? Not at the court house or any major publication… anyway there is a new lawsuit with 2 actresses listed a using Michael Fassbender of infecting them with a potentially fatso STD. I love it! What a loser… I can't believe these actresses even sleep with him. He is actually kind of gross I meet him at Comic Conn about 5feet 8 inches tall, drunk as a skunk, road map on his face, gross little shark teeth.

Michael Fassbender has hepatitis and is know long spreading it to Hollywood actresses and any woman that will lay down with him. Michael lost an unheard of amount of weight to prepare for his role in Steve McQueen's Film Shame. The production hired a doctor to over see the weight loss but the doctor did not take into consideration that Michael Fassbender is an alcoholic and drug addict. I worked on a film with him shortly after and he failed his physical exam and tested positive for hepatitis. He continues to drink and drug during filming and knowingly exposed one of the female talent to the sexually transmit able disease. This behavior should be illegal, hepatitis is potentially life threatening and he knows he has it.

If you saw his remarkable performance in "Shame", plus his work in "Prometheus", it would not surprise me if this handsome picture of Fassbender is meant to intimate that he could do a musical on Broadway, or a biopic of Frank Sinatra. What do you think, George Clooney?

Get really creative. Film City of Angels with Fassbender as Stein and Hugh Jackman as Stone … or vice versa.

The Playlist pathetic obsession with Fassbender is going way too far. He's one of the most overrated actors in recent memory but has a hell of a publicist, I'll give him that.
And The Playlist will find a way to cast him as Cleopatra, God, Napoleon and Mother Theresa next.

Seriously, is there anything he can't do.

I agree with Note to Fassbender Trolls

This website should look into getting comment moderation. You risk losing credibility and the chance to interview actors and actresses in the future by allowing slanderous statements in your comment section. Michael Fassbender was never charged with any crime and to imply that he was is undeniably slander and against the law. There was an incident a few months back where Carey Mulligan refused an interview with an entertainment blog after reading derogatory comments about herself on their website.

Note to Fassbender Trolls

When did the Playlist start getting infected with so many insane hater trolls? Listen low-lives and jealous fans of no talent pretty boys, this is a movie website. We talk about acting, roles and movies. Take your character assassinations, defamation, gossip, and fantasies to TMZ.com. Talk about the article topic or GTFO. You all sound cray cray and boring as f**k.

Sure y'all that woman was definitely lying about having her ovarian cyst burst at Fassbender's hands. And of course women never find themselves in a cycle of abusive relationships. And it's not like money can be used to hush up any allegations. Every single person defending this alcoholic (and I don't think you can deny that aspect) needs to have their heads examined. Oh no rumors being spread about my favorite actor!!!! These allegations were around before he hit it big. Your precious CELEBRITY is a douchebag, end of story. The fact that people can't even decipher that from the serial killer look he has going on is sad.

B. The author of this piece needs to jump off of Fassbender's **** for a quick sec and BREATHE.

C. To the people alleging abuse, the DA and LAPD continued the investigation AFTER the restraining order was dropped. They have the right to do so without the alleged victim's cooperation. Once the investigation continued for some time (with Fassbender's complete cooperation) the DA found that the case lacked any evidence to pursue via trial and was dropped. If any of this is news to you and you were moronic enough to post that he is an abuser, I'd suggest educating yourself on matters before you go accusing someone of something you're too stupid to research whether or not they actually did. Also, the accuser, Leasi Andrews, reported this alleged incident NINE MONTHS AFTER she claimed it occurred and while Fassbender was in England filming a movie. He flew back to the States to give a statement to the DA and to fully cooperate with the authorities.

Hugh Jackman has been preparing "Carousel" for years. He has a script ready, but can´t find anybody to pay for it. He also sang it in on stage and was fantastic. If him and Fassbender were in a musical togehter, now *that* would be absolutely great. I think there are only few people who are "triple-threats" so why not to use them? Maybe throw Ewan McGregor into the mix as well? :-))

Maybe you should try to do some research before you start spreading unconfirmed accusations against anybody. Fassbender's case was investigated by LA district attorney (DA Steve Cooley for those, who are interested) and he didn't found any proof that it ever happened. In other words, woman was proven to be lying. Those who researched more that topic could write even more interesting things about it, e.g. a story about a certain producer, who stays in a strange on again/off again type of relationship with that woman, who was so jealous that his ex-girlfriend has chosen for a short period of time Faasbender over him, that he decided to spread rumours about Fassbender claiming that he is going to destroy his career even before it started. Nice, right? Besides, even without investigation etc. what happened to innocent until proven guilty, huh?

Woman beater, can't sing, overrated actor.

I have a hard time seeing when this potential Sinatra biopic is going to get off the ground, Scorsese has definitely got the Wolf of Wall Street going but after that You can pick any one of Silence which is supposedly supposed to star Daniel Day, or Snowman and even the Irishman which is supposed to reunite him with DeNiro, Pesci and bring Pacino in. Assuming however, that they get the Sinatra biopic going there seems few better than Fassbender who is quickly becoming one of the most bankable and dependable leading men in the game, I think most people are getting a little tired of the Scorsese-DiCaprio link-up. Other names to be thrown into the ring would have to be Gordon-Levitt, Gosling or Bale as the likelihood of it being an unknown who can sing seem low as a biopic like this almost certainly requires a big name

Fassbender all the way for the role. Didn't know the guy could sing too. Super talented man.

Seriously, what CAN'T this man do? He's a brilliant actor, he can sing, he's handsome and he's got a massive penis. Some people just have it all.

Fassbender is the only actor in the world who can really act. Lets cast him in everything. Everything he does is brilliant. Lets all agree on the fact that he can play any role. He is the ultimate actor. We should reshoot old movies and replace the actors with Fassbender. I didn't know what acting was until I saw Fassbender. What a great actor. I feel so much better knowing that he is acting somewhere someplace.

The Playlist might want to look into comment screening. This kind of unfounded gossip really has no place here.

I think Fassbender would be way better than DiCaprio. I have nothing against DiCaprio (I usually like his performances), but Fassbender would be more likely to transform himself into Sinatra. DiCaprio is always just DiCaprio delivering lines.

I think Fassbender is more appropriate as a replacement in the musical ONCE. For the Sinatra biopic, I'd love to see someone like Hugh Jackman. Ever heard his "One for My Baby" or "Luck Be a Lady"? Pure "ol' blue eyes"-style magic. Plus he's a heck of an actor as well as a natural-born showman, as evidenced in his stage shows. The perfect Sinatra storm. Scorcese: take notice!

Before you go about maligning people, get your facts straight, Mr. Fassbender was accused by an ex-girlfriend (with a history of accusing boyfriends, then dropping charges) of assaulting her then dropped the charges and proceeded to make out with him. Obviously, they have a complicated relationship. Does than make him an abuser? Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? It's too easy to accuse on the Internet without taking responsibility for your statements.

This is probably the most embarrassing fanboy post I have ever read. Maybe instead of spending time fawning over fan videos on YouTube you should look into his propensity for beating women.
