Congrats to doc filmmaker Alex Gibney (“Gonzo,” “Magic Trip”), who has obtained an infusion of cash from John Schmidt’s Content Media, which has acquired half of Jigsaw Productions. Gibney wants to add staff and expand into more areas in film and television, including episodic television and features.
Jigsaw and Content will collaborate on some in-the-works ongoing projects including Gibney’s untitled doc for HBO; a documentary on The Eagles, produced by Gibney and directed by Alison Ellwood; “Finding Fela!,” a doc on the iconic Nigerian singer; and “Park Avenue,” as part of the “Why Poverty?” series.
Jigsaw is also developing two original feature films and a mini-series based on Ali Soufan’s book “Black Banners.”
London-based Content’s film, television and digital divisions will handle international distribution for some Jigsaw projects.
Gibney’s docs include sports profile “The Last Gladiators,” “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer,” the Oscar-nominated “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” and the 2008 Oscar-winner “Taxi to the Dark Side.”
