First Image Of Idris Elba In Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim'

Despite his near omnipresence in the media, and the countless projects that he's attached to, we actually haven't seen a directorial effort from Guillermo Del Toro since 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." Yes, it's been that long, but not for lack of trying. Del Toro has faced a double whammy of disappointment over the last years, stepping away from directing "The Hobbit" films as they became continually delayed thanks to MGM's financial woes, and seeing his R-rated "At The Mountains Of Madness" get shelved by Universal. But there been no stopping Del Toro's "Pacific Rim," with the film currently in the midst of production, and while specifics are being kept under wraps, we now have our first look at the film.

Total Film (via The Film Stage) has the first picture of Idris Elba in the print edition of their magazine. And that is one helluva suit he's got on. The Travis Beacham-scripted tale is set in 2025, and will follow a human resistance against a series of devastating monster attacks that threaten to destroy Earth. Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff round out the fascinating, eclectic and international cast.

Next spring we'll see the results of whatever Del Toro is cooking up…."Pacific Rim" lands on May 10, 2013.

The suit looks like something out of the GI Joe movie.

I'm assuming PACIFIC RIM is meant to be the start of a franchise? If that happens will Del Toro stick around?

I, like many others, want to believe that Del Toro is making a magical film, but that suit just looks so damn awful. I hope it's not a sign of things to come. But hey, I shall retain my boyish optimism…

Actually, it opens on July 12, 2013. They moved it back a couple of weeks ago.
