Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom” debuted to a solid 2.1 million viewers Sunday night, HBO’s third best drama premiere in the past four years.
Only the 2010 premieres of “Boardwalk Empire” (4.8 million viewers) and “Game of Thrones” (2.2 million) fared better than last night’s “The Newsroom.” It’s also a vast improvement over Michael Mann and David Milch’s troubled horseracing drama “Luck,” which only drew 1.1 million viewers for its premiere before being canceled a handful of episodes later.
UPDATE: After just two episodes, HBO has renewed “The Newsroom” for a second season.
Much like the recent HBO successes “Girls” and “Veep,” the first episode of “The Newsroom” is being made available to non-subscribers on HBO.com, YouTube, DailyMotion, TV.com and many Free On Demand platforms. If you get hooked and still can’t shell out the big bucks for premium cable, remember there’s always HBO Go password sharing.
