Lauryn Hill’s Thesis On Where Art & Corporate Interests Meet Recalls Dave Chappelle’s Escape

Lauryn Hill's Thesis On Where Art & Corporate Interests Meet Recalls Dave Chappelle's Escape

When artists experience danger and crisis under the effects of this kind of insidious manipulation, everyone easily accepts that there was something either dysfunctional or defective with the artist, rather than look at, and fully examine, the system and its means and policies of exploiting/’doing business’. Not only is this unrealistic, it is very dark in its motivation, conveniently targeting the object of their hero worship by removing any evidence that they ‘needed’ or celebrated this very same resource just years, months or moments before.

Since those who believe they need a hero/celebrity outnumber the actual heroes/celebrities, people feel safe and comfortably justified in numbers, committing egregious crimes in the name of the greater social ego. Ironically diminishing their own true hero-celebrity nature in the process. It was this schism and the hypocrisy, violence and social cannibalism it enabled, that I wanted and needed to be freed from, not from art or music, but the suppression/repression and reduction of that art and music to a bottom line alone, without regard for anything else.

Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual. I Love making art, I Love making music, these are as natural and necessary for me almost as breathing or talking. To be denied the right to pursue it according to my ability, as well as be properly acknowledged and compensated for it, in an attempt to control, is manipulation directed at my most basic rights! These forms of expression, along with others, effectively comprise my free speech! Defending, preserving, and protecting these rights are critically important, especially in a paradigm where veiled racism, sexism, ageism, nepotism, and deliberate economic control are still blatant realities!!!

Some Sunday morning reading for you folks courtesy of Ms Lauryn Hill.

In case you haven’t heard, Lauryn Hill was charged with failing to file income tax returns for several years, the US attorney’s office in New Jersey announced on Thursday.

Hill earned more than $1.6 million during 2005, 2006 and 2007, the three years that she failed to file returns, federal prosecutors said, with her primary source of income being royalties, and the 4 different businesses she owns.

In response to this news being made public, Ms Hill took to the web to respond, creating a Tumblr account, and penning this epic piece on how the unsavory business side of “Show-business” prompted her to be free of it entirely, and live “underground” for a period of time, “in order to build a community of people, like-minded in their desire for freedom and the right to pursue their goals and lives without being manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda.

It reminded me of this Dave Chappelle appearance on Inside The Actor’s Studio a few years ago, in which he addressed, in his own way, what Lauryn Hill gives as reasons for not paying her taxes for 3 years; not that I’m defending not paying your taxes, by the way… Pay your taxes people, otherwise the IRS will come after you, as you can see; I’m just making connections, as I always like to do; but I also believe that they both are trying to have a conversation, and engage us on those pernicious aspects of what we call the entertainment industry.

You can read the entire Lauryn Hill piece HERE.

Here’s the Dave Chappelle clip:

"@Nadine–your effort to engage this individual in productive dialogue is commendable. However his illogical comments reminds me of the Facebook rantings from the dude who ate his roommate." This had me cracking UP for a good 5 minutes. Thanks, BluTopaz. And in case Ms. Hill ever catches wind of this thread: I love your work, your energy, your passion, your intelligence…but you still gotta pay your taxes.

I don't think this is a conversation they really want to have with the public, if they know better. A childhood buddy of mine from Brooklyn tried to have this conversation public on a nationally syndicated radio show and they put him away for good. Like Matt Dillon said in Crash, "Wait 'till you've been on the job (in this case show business) a few more years… Wait 'till you've been doing it a little longer. You think you know who you are? You have no idea."

**SHAKING MY DAMN HEAD** Listen folks, I was hesitent to read this post because of what I thought I'd find. And yep, there it was, it smacked me in my damn face. If it was a snake it would have bit me. I am not prepared to call it "misogyny" because it's much deeper than that. It's like an insidious weed who's roots will not die even though the flowers of it's head are exterminated. It's like a habit, or cancer, with no cure. Only constant monitoring and vigilent maintainance can keep the inevitable at bay. But wait, let me go back to something Nadine said in another post. It relates to my sentiments about this post and the comments. In Nadine's reply on the possibilty of building a fanboy/girl base, she said: "Short answer …. honestly… because we hate each other… we actually HATE each other and look elsewhere for affirmation and adulation" … "there will be no fanboys/girls on a large scale amongst Blacks in America unless the product reaffirms White Supremacy OR ANY OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS' SUPREMACY and/or pits Black sub-groups against each other feeding the hate". Wow… there it is… which is a perfect segway to my concerns. What the hell did some of you read? Huh – tell you didn't fall for the setup and the Okie-Doke call out, and thus rolled with the other fools who thought the gist of Lauryn Hill's concerns were about her refusal to paying taxes?! Did any of you even read the link, or did you have a predisposition to hate on a beautiful and talented black person? First, her charge was a misdermeaner for failure to fill a tax return! Do you understand that? She did not cheat or lie or refuse to pay, read the freakin' link. IT'S A DAMN MISDEMEANOR!….. "My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes. This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.
As this, and other areas of issue are resolved and set straight, I am able to get back to doing what I should be doing, the way it should be done. This is part of that process." – Lauryn Hill. Those were not the words of a delusional black woman. Actually, if one cares to read her entire "thesis" ( actually read it and absorb it) they will soon find that beneath the spiteful words of the hate mongering of media outlets, blogs and ignorant niggaz (yeah i said ignant stankin' ass negros) there's obviously a very intelligent and caring person. Besides, she not the first person, by any stretch of imagination, who decided that everything that glittered was not gold, and then took a break from the limelight. But yet, many of us are quick to say "She Fu*ked Up". Well, I don't have a Phd in front of my name, so I don't have the answers, but Lauryn called the shot before it popped —> "When artists experience danger and crisis under the effects of this kind of insidious manipulation, everyone easily accepts that there was something either dysfunctional or defective with the artist, rather than look at, and fully examine, the system and its means and policies of exploiting/’doing business" ~ Lauryn Hill

Could be she thinks only non artists should have to pay taxes?

Where's the post about Gwyneth Paltrow tweeting the N-word below a picture she took with Spike Lee. That Spike Lee has yet to address but everyone else seems to be defending?

did she really say: "free speech"?

shame on her…she's smarter than this…invoking the first amendment when she knows full well that it doesn't apply to private entities or individuals…she herself i manipulating her followers with this type of rhetoric…

Over-commercialization is paying money to listen to a has-been perform songs from a hit album that saw its heyday over a decade ago. I loved that Lauryn was this super talented, gorgeous dark skinned sister who seemed to have it all. But there have been plenty of brilliant artists who have enjoyed success for decades, and did not start believing their own hype the way L has. Ask most of our legends if they have paid their taxes. Any current popularity L has is only because we are sorely lacking for contemporary musical heroes. The IRS does not care about all that mess, and they will take her away from that tribe of hers if she doesn't come to her senses.

Lauryn Hill is one of my favorite musicians. If a store is playing her jams, I always stop immediately to savor the melody. However, giiiirl only a fool f*cks with Uncle Sam. Pay up like the rest of us.

Er… Ms. Hill pay your taxes. But but having said that. I believe that the sister had a nervous breakdown and came through on other side as a very different person. Some artists despite their talent are not cut out for the grind of entertainment industry. Or they were surrounded by the wrong people during their tenure as mainstream artists. She's simply one of them

Consumens consumit vobis (Consuming consumes you). It is what it is. I understand their reasons and their motivations but… There's no excuse for slipping on your taxes — that's one. The other thing is, you've got brothas doing two years in the pen right now who won't collect $50 mil for pain and suffering when they fly out. My personal response is the same Marlo gave Vinson in "The Wire" when his advisor said that the prisons and graveyards were full of boys who wore the crown: "The point is they wore it. It's my turn to wear it now." Better to ask that the cup be removed AFTER you've already had your fill — just sayin'.

On this site suggestions are made for and against actors getting certain roles. For and against certain plots. Is this not part of the same damning cycle. These suggest that people on this site not only wish they had power over the industry but power over the stars as well. The right to control the artists so they can become the hero they want them to become. However it is also something very sick about an artists who thinks they have a right to become millionaires because they imitate the act of sharing personal stories with the lame audience. Pledging fealty to masters you never meet. Animals dont do this. Humans create societies to protect them from force but kneel to so many masters that have no more honor to give.
