Tribeca Film has acquired the rights to Kim Nguyen’s “War Witch,” which had its world premiere and garnered a Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, and took home the Best Actress in a Narrative Feature Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. The talented actress in question is 15-year-old Rachel Mwanza, who was discovered on the streets of Kinshasa, Congo.
Shot in the Congo, “War Witch” follows 12-year-old Kamona (Mwanza), a young girl kidnapped by African rebels, forced at gunpoint to kill her family and then fight as a child soldier in the African jungle against the government. But there’s a supernatural aspect: Kamona can see pale grey ghosts in the jungle trees that warn her of approaching enemies. Deemed an invaluable asset to the rebel army and given the title of War Witch by rebel leader Great Tiger, Kamona finds herself saddled with a life even further away from stable normalcy.
Tribeca Film plans a multiple-platform release for “War Witch” for the first quarter of 2013. In the meantime, let’s see that trailer soon!
