William McDonald Named New Chair of UCLA Department of Film, TV, and Digital Media

UCLA has appointed cinematographer and professor William McDonald as the new Chair of UCLA Department of Film, TV, and Digital Media (FTVDM).  He will start his position on July 1, 2012.

Professor McDonald is currently FTVDM Vice-Chair of Undergraduate Studies and Head of Cinematography. He succeeds outgoing film producer and professor Barbara Boyle who “successfully served as our FTVDM Chair for nine years with great distinction,” stated Dean Teri Schwartz, thanking Boyle for her “outstanding leadership and groundbreaking initiatives.”

McDonald’s work as cinematographer and producer include both documentary and dramatic films that have won numerous film festival awards.  Among them are three independent documentaries produced with his wife Pamela Beere Briggs: “Funny Ladies: A Portrait of Female Cartoonists,” “Women of Mystery: Three Writers Who Forever Changed Detective Fiction,” and “Mysterious California: Four Authors,” a visual journey through the distinctive California landscapes of four crime novels.
