Following last month’s news that “Frankenweenie,” Tim Burton’s latest foray into stop-motion animation, will open this year’s edition of Fantastic Fest in Austin, the festival has announced its first wave of film programming.
The biggest addition to the lineup is the red carpet premiere of “Dredd 3D,” the latest film imagining of the popular comic book character, first played on screen by Sylvester Stallone in the 1995 blockbuster, “Judge Dredd.” The new film, directed by Pete Travis, stars Karl Urban as the Judge.
Other highlights include Rodney Ascher’s festival favorite “Room 237,” which explores the bizarre theories about the symbolism in “The Shining;” a repertory screening of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining;” “Wrong,” Quentin Dupieux’s anticipated follow-up to “Rubber;” and the U.S. premiere of the aptly titled “Cockneys Vs Zombies,” an irreverent British comedy about a botched bank robbery that takes place during a zombie outbreak.
Fantastic Fest runs September 20-27 in Austin, Texas.
