Kaufman and Harmon are collaborating with Dino Stematopolous (who created Adult Swim’s “Moral Orel” and plays Star-Burns on “Community”) to produce, and Duke Johnson (also a “Community” alum) will be directing.
The Kaufman-Harmon-Johnson team goes by the name “Starburns Industries” and is hoping to raise $200K to get “Anomalisa” made. They are offering some seriously cool rewards for backers, including a 20-page custom screenplay by Harmon for those pledging $5000 or more, a full handcrafted set of “Anomalisa” stop-motion figurines for $7,500 or more, and an executive producing credit (plus a Twitter thank you) for $10K or more. We know what you’re thinking: How much does one have to pledge for a Charlie Kaufman 20-page custom screenplay? If only that were a prize!
Both Harmon and Kaufman have time to dedicate themselves to this project. Harmon was dismissed by Sony execs (or as he put it on his Tumblr page, “I got fired”) as showrunner from “Community” in May, and Kaufman’s would-be upcoming project “Frank or Francis” seems to be in permanent limbo.
Their Kickstarter page synopsis:
“The film follows a celebrated motivational speaker travelling the country, changing the lives of countless people. But in the course of transforming others, his life has become hollow and meaningless. It’s a grey and monotonous existence where people literally look and sound identical.
Suddenly one day, a girl’s voice pierces through the veil of nothingness. She fills him with such a rush of ‘aliveness,’ he’s willing to abandon everything and everyone, including his own family, and escape with her to a better life.”
