I happened to catch up with an older episode of the Operation Kino podcast this week, which was recorded in the wake of the official announcement of Kevin Smith's new online series "Spoilers." One of the concerns among the Operation Kino co-hosts was that Smith's series would eventually become “Late Night with Kevin Smith" and less focused on meaningful critical discussion. Indeed, five episodes in, the most notable and recommendable portions of the show have become either Jason Mewes’ antics (as a newly-minted Silent Jay) or the weekly sit-down with a notable industry personality.
While the audience’s discussion of whether or not "Magic Mike" was sexy enough has its entertainment value, the biggest takeaways this week come from Smith’s talk with Jon Favreau. It’s not surprising that avowed comic book fan Kevin Smith is a fan of the first "Iron Man" film. But he goes one step further: "This is my feeling," he says, "I think it’s a perfect motion picture."
Obviously, the guests that he has on are comfortable enough to share the backstory of some of their notable work, which helps keep it a two-way affair. Favreau is, like Smith, an actor-director who has gone from directing indies to working on more mainstream projects. Matching these two filmmaker personalities together makes for an entertaining interview segment in which Favreau talks about casting Robert Downey, Jr., making "Swingers," and flying a plane with Harrison Ford.
Now you tell us: Does the spoiler discussion need to be a bigger part of the show? Would you listen to a Smith-led JarmuschCast? Let us know what you think.
