Boasting a deceptively simple premise, if some of the advance word on “The Loneliest Planet” starring Gael García Bernal is anything to go by, filmmaker Julia Loktev has made the most of and crafted something truly special. And certainly, the trailer has definitely piqued our interest.
The story centers on a young couple (Bernal and Hani Furstenberg), engaged to be married, who are backpacking in the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia. They hire a guide to lead them on a hike filled with stunning vistas, and…something happens that changes things, irrevocably. Of course, just what that is, is probably best left to explored when you see the movie for yourself, but it undoubedly causes a dynamic shift in the narrative. We caught the film earlier this year at the Portland International Film Festival and called it “the kind of film that could lead to a great discussion after the credits roll” that leaves you guessing at every turn.
Check it out for yourself when it opens via Sundance Selects on October 26th. Full trailer below or in HD at Apple. Update: Trailer removed due to sound errors, we’ll have a replacement as soon as its ready.
