In a crudely poetic way, it's sort of fitting that ever curious, genre hopping Steven Soderbergh's final year behind the camera before he goes on hiatus would find him working on a male stripper pic ("Magic Mike"), a psychological thriller ("The Bitter Pill") and now, a biopic on one the most…flamboyant entertainers of all time, Liberace. And with the movie now shooting, someone has captured of snap of Matt Damon and Michael Douglas on set, in costume. And it is glorious.
Penned by Richard LaGravenese (“Water for Elephants,” “The Fisher King”) and inspired by "Behind the Candelabra: My Life With Liberace" by Liberace's lover Scott Thorson, the film will find Douglas in the lead role with Damon co-starring as Thorson, the performer's secret lover who engaged in a globetrotting romance with the star. After their relationship deteriorated, Thorson filed a massive lawsuit against Liberace before watching him die of AIDS. It's certainly a fascinating story, and one that will see both actors in roles unlike anything we've seen from them, and definitely in wardrobe that's flashier than their usual attire, onscreen or off. It will be interesting to see what kind of tone Soderbergh will bring to the picture, but considering how much he subverted expectations with "Magic Mike," we're eager to see what he does on his final hurrah.
An interesting supporting cast is lined up for this with Dan Aykroyd, Debbie Reynolds, Scott Bakula, Rob Lowe, Cheyenne Jackson, Boyd Holbrook, Nicky Katt, Tom Papa and more all on board. Shooting continues on the film and HBO will release it sometime in 2013. [E!]
