'Do The Right Thing' On Broadway? Spike Lee Is Considering It

Potentially energized during his stint as director of Mike Tyson’s one-man show, Undisputed Truth (currently running on Broadway), Spike Lee is considering bringing his seminal 1989 film Do The Right Thing to Broadway as well, telling the Good Morning America this morning…

“I’m speaking to Mr James Nederlander about it.”

James Nederlander is of course the producer of Undisputed Truth.

This came up during a conversation about Red Hook Summer, and Spike’s upcoming endeavors. And from the below clip, it’s said that Spike’s wife, Tonya, is encouraging him to do it. So whether the thought originated with her, or with Spike isn’t clear.

Regardless, don’t be too surprised if it’s suddenly announced that Do The Right Thing is coming to Broadway.

It’s a movie that actually lends itself well to the stage, although if I were to recommend any of Spike’s films for a stage adaptation, it would instead be School Daze… as a musical.

What do you folks think about Do The Right Thing coming to Broadway?

You could argue this was long overdue. I mean, they got a musical for Spiderman.

SEEING MOOKIE SING A ROMANTIC BALLAD WOULD BE HILARIOUS, EVEN MORESO IF IT'S DIRECTED AT A STACK OF MONEY.

School Daze as a musical, but Mo Better Blues would be even better since there are musical performances within the film.

Agree w/everyone else here–'School Daze', yes–'DTRT'?? Naaahhhh….

Do the Right Thing..?…seriously!?, its both too didatic and not a good fit, maybe if he were to write it like say, Danish Auteur_Lars Von Trier's "Dogville" or Bertoit Brecht's Caucasion Chalk Circle something on those lines but as a Brodway musical?..hell naw… i'm with you Tambay, maybe School Daze or Mo`Better Blues even?, but whose me to tell his bourgie wife anything?.

Jeremy

i was gonna say the exact same thing Tambay. I've always wondered why no one has adapted School Daze for the stage. it would be perfect. (i want to direct it, so no one beat me to it :-)
