“Marcelo Gomes: Anatomy of a Male Ballet Dancer”
Tweetable Logline (sell us your film in 140 characters or less) * At the top of his field, Marcelo Gomes is a ballet dancer in transition. After two surgeries, he worries about what he’ll do next.
Marcelo Gomes’ artistic ability matches his technical prowess. Our documentary will capture this dynamic equilibrium with a mix of rehearsal, performance, interview and verite footage of Marcelo traveling the world as a guest artist in Asia, North and South America and Europe. The film will delve into a brief history of the male ballet dancer and explore what separates a good partner from a truly great one. Marcelo knows the career of a dancer is brief and he has started choreographing. With his reputation on the line, does he have the talent and drive to become a serious choreographer?
Directors/Producers/Shooters: David Barba & James Pellerito
About the Production:
Marcelo Gomes epitomizes the best of the male ballet dancer: strong technique, unrivaled partnering skills and a deep commitment to acting. But men in ballet are often in the background. We are longtime balletomanes and to our knowledge no one has really tackled the subject of the male ballet dancer experience. We want to examine this theme through Marcelo’s story and by delving into a brief history of the male dancer focusing on Nijinsky, Nureyev and Baryshnikov. We plan to explore the role of masculinity in ballet as well as the social and cultural constructs that affect this art form.
We have been in production for two years so far and we are currently fundraising to finish production by the end of the year.
