Trailer Watch: Mike Newell's 'Great Expectations' Goes Old-School vs. Alfonso Cuaron's '90s Version

Unlike Alfonso Cuaron's contemporary-set "Great Expecatations" (1998), starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke, Mike Newell's version (adapted by "One Day" scribe David Nicholls) is set in the 1860s of Charles Dickens' classic. The first international trailer has arrived (below). Starring Helena Bonham-Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jeremy Irvine ("War Horse") and Holliday Grainger ("The Borgias"), the film will debut in Toronto before its UK opening on November 30. No US release has been scheduled.

While Bonham-Carter as Miss Havisham is intriguing, this iteration lacks the movie star ooomph of Paltrow and Hawke's Pip and Estella (but that didn't help with critics: it was 38% rotten).
