'X-Men: First Class' Sequel Will Be Based On 'Days of Future Past' (Cast Storm, Bishop, Others)

Ok you superhero comic book afficionados (especially those familiar with the expansive X-Men universe) – I’m going to need your help with this one.

It’s been revealed this morning that the sequel to last year’s blockbuster X-Men: First Class will be based on the “Days of Future Past” storyline, seen in a pair of Uncanny X-Men issues published in 1981.

The story, which sounds really cool…:

… alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps. The present-day X-Men are forewarned of the possible future by a future version of their teammate Kitty Pryde, whose mind traveled back in time and possessed her younger self to warn the X-Men. She succeeds in her mission and returns to the future, but despite her success, the future timeline still exists as an alternative timeline rather than as the actual future.

I’m no X-Men pro, but all that sounds intriguing enough that I’m in! Although I’m sure it means much more to those of you who know more about this particular universe.

And if you fall into that group, here’s where your input is needed: My research tells me that in this storyline, there are at least 2 (I guess we could refer to them as) “mutants of the African diaspora” (for lack of a better term) featured – Storm (who was played by Halle Berry in the first X-Men trilogy of films in the early- to mid-2000s), and Bishop, the son of Aborigine mutant refugees, whose powers include energy absorption and redirection, as well as superhuman physical attributes, and the ability to instinctively know his present location.

And worth noting, when Professor Charles Xavier offered him a place within the X-Men, he was placed under Storm’s tutelage.

There might be others worth mentioning here, but there are so many characters, and teams, that I don’t know how you folks keep up with them all.

But these are the two I could immediately identify (their character photos above); and so my first question for those who know more about this than I do is: are there any others we should know about, and how involved is each of them in this storyline? And secondly, who should be cast to play these 2 characters, and any others of significance – assuming the movie stays somewhat true to the series?

In my research, I found a few fanboy suggestions that Michael Jai White should play Bishop; others mentioned Idris Elba. As for who to play Storm, not much; what I found a lot of were folks complaining about the fact that Halle Berry was cast in the first trilogy.

In the interview below, producer Bryan Singer confirms the above storyline for the sequel, but also adds that “It deals with aspects of that comic, but also some very new things.”

What those “very new things” could be aren’t yet known. So let the speculation begin.

Mark – the earth isn't even that old!! You must be an evolutionist.

Even though he is 60 years now, Michael Dorn would have been the perfect actor to play Bishop – he definitely has the physique and voice as well as the height!!!

halle berry for storm

zoe saldona would be good as storm

X-men was my fave cartoon and I have been waiting for 4 movies to see a storyline that would be cool. I always thought they would be too scared to handle any timetravel storyline but it seems they are satisfied that the uninitiated are converts so they can go more risque. I would love if it was Apocalypse! I just wonder if it would be possible to have him realised on screen

I'm excited to see this adaption introduced in the X-Men series because it shows the studio that the studio that ruined their Marvel assets are thinking bigger. They had a cool idea with First class and it looks just as it was played out, a rushed production. With that said, Vaugnand Singer both said they are introducing only one additional character to the X roster. Will this hold true? Who knows. If it does, then a physical being will be transported back and not just a consciousness. The members of the X-Men in DOFP are not current members or old enough yet to be in the sequel. How did Thomas Hardy put it in Inception… "you mustn't be afraid to dream bigger, darling." I believe Magneto will want revenge on the beach incident and they will have to stop an assassination yes. Magneto will control the "magic bullet" that killed Kennedy. And whoever comes back will be FEMALE. The X-MEN do not have any females on their current team. They went bad. And Singer said the character will be able to go toe-to-toe with Magneto. I think they will screw the pooch and put in Rachel Summers!

Jacky Ido. Man is brilliant.

FATIMA SIAD as a young Storm.

Bishop was involved in the tv show adaptation of that story line, but he had nothing to do with the comic version.

Why, why, WHY do people want Michael Jai White for any & every black superhero role that's mentioned? He has the body and the looks, but brother couldn't act to save his life. I'm still tight he RUINED Spawn! What about the Dark Knight? All he knows how to do is snarl. There are plenty of buff, TALENTED actors out there who could do the role justice.

*Rant over*

Sofie O. would make a great choice for Storm! Either way, I can't wait to see it!

X-Men First Class: Days of Future Past

I am Familiar with the X-Men Universe and The Days of Future Past Storyline and With The Inclusion of Bishop In The Storyline Would Call For A Strong Presence of Characters Tied To Him Even If It Was Just Small Cameo Appearances Throughout the Film. First, By Bishop’s Sister “Shard” Then The Time and Dimension Traveling “Gateway” Also Related To Bishop and Shard. I Believe With a Strong Role In The Film by a Young Storm Would Be a Bridge To The Her Eventually Appearing In a Black Panther Film. Also To Mention The Native American Character “Forge” Should Make a Cameo As Well. Here Are My Choices With Alternates Based On The Age Choices and Range In The Film Depending On How It’s Written.

Ororo “Storm” Munroe-Joy Bryant/Shannon Kane/Ariel Meridith
Lucas “Bishop” Bishop-Morris Chestnut/Mechad Brooks/Ving Rhames
Shard Bishop- Rihanna /Kirby Griffin/ Gugu Mbatha-Raw/Daphne Duplaix
Gateway-Sidney Poitier/ Robert Guillaume

I'd love to see Nona Gaye have a crack at Storm. Most fans who complained about Halle Berry being cast as Storm (myself included) in the first trilogy would say, when asked who we preferred, that Angela Bassett would be a superior choice. The first time I saw Nona, see impressed upon me, looks-wise, anyway, as a younger version of Angela. Depending on what age the producers are wanting to go with and/or how much tinkering they want to do with the timeline, Nona could be a solid choice if there are plans for Storm to appear in movies past this upcoming sequel.

Storm should be played by Emelia Burns an Austrailian actress. She has only done a few films (e.g. The Condemened and Don't be Afraid of the Dark) and she was on the tv series Terra Nova. She can pull of an African accent, since she had to do it for The Condemened. I think she could pull of a badass mohawk Storm!

Assuming Storm will even feature, I say Joy Bryant (Parenthood). Tall, regal-like and not too well-known as to take away from the movie.

They should cast Yaya Dacosta, Anika Noni Rose, Naomie Harris, Nicole "sky" Grey or Sophie Okonedo as Storm.

willie dynamite

Sounds like they will be taking elements from the Age of Apocalypse storyline where Bishop played a key role. Glad to see them attempting to infuse other elements of the xmen saga in to the franchise. The first trilogy left a a lot to be desired.

Phillip Jackson

Well in the old animated TV show, Bishop was the catalyst of the two part Days of Futures Past episodes. I haven't read the comic series of that arch but if he's not heavily featured (which seems odd since Bishop is all over a lot of the future timeline) I guess it will just depend on what source material they are pulling from.

Fun fact, all of the old animated TV show is on netflix instant watch.

former xmen comics fan here…yeh, bishop is not really involved in days of future past storyline…if my my memory serves me right, he was born about 70 years after that same timeline. the xmen died in that timeline except wolverine, forge and storm who were all senior citizens. it will be interesting if the casting goes that way too.. there was also speculation that bishop is storms grandson. all in all, this storyline is probably one of the best from the comics. but if the former live action film are anything to go by, it would probably be a letdown

Bishop wasn't in "Days of Future Past." He appears in a similar themed alternate timeline X-Men adventure. (

Also, Australian indigenous people are not black Africans. Their ancestors left Africa in one of the first waves of modern humans to migrate eastward about 75,000 years ago and traveled through South Asia and eventually reaching Australia.
