Alfonso Cuaron To Direct Supernatural Drama Pilot At NBC, Co-Producing With J.J. Abrams

As we continue to patiently wait for Alfonso Cuaron‘s “Gravity” to get a release date and a marketing campaign from Warner Bros., it seems even the filmmaker himself is getting a bit antsy, and is lining up his first small-screen gig in nearly a decade.

Cuaron will direct the pilot of a supernatural drama over at NBC, which he will co-produce with J.J. Abrams (among a few others), who is in the midst of launching “Revolution” this fall on the network. Surprisingly, unlike most Abrams-related gigs that are kept secret in the early stages, Deadline reveals that the show, co-written by Cuaron and Mark Friedman (“Home Of The Brave“), will center on a girl with special powers of some kind that will fully come to fruition in seven years, who comes under the protection of a man recently sprung from prison, who attempts to shield her from those trying to hunt her down.

Cuaron has done a couple of previous stints on TV, helming an episode of the mystery series “Fallen Angels,” as well as six entries in the Spanish horror/fantasy show “Hora Marcada.” And certainly genre elements have always been a part of his work to some degree, so all of this is very intriguing. The untitled program has a pilot production commitment at the network, so we’ll be curious to see what kind of talent this attracts, and if it will make it past this stage into a full series order.

As a Cuaron fan it sounds really interesting… as long as JJ Abrahms isn't too involved (or else I guess we could expect a cheesy conspiracy theory background). That said it also depends a lot on who will be cast as these two main characters.

This reminds me of an old Justice League episode with a girl named Ace or something
