Anthony Mackie Confirmed To Play Falcon In ‘Captain America’ Sequel

Anthony Mackie Confirmed To Play Falcon In 'Captain America' Sequel

Well.. even though there hasn’t been an official announcement of this, I guess we can go ahead and say that Anthony Mackie is no longer “in talks” to play Falcon in the Captain America sequel; in the below interview with MTV, star Chris Evans pretty much confirms that Mackie is definitely going to play Falcon in the movie.

A quick recap… last August (2011), Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely, screenwriters of Captain America: The First Avenger, revealed what their hopes were for the sequel to that movie, stating that they were intrigued by the chance to explore some of the latter-day additions to the Captain America mythos, like his sidekick The Falcon, one of comics’ first black superheroes.

“I want both of them… Falcon is awesome. We can’t play with time so much to have Cap go back to Harlem in the ’70’s and clean up the streets, but it would be awesome to go straight up, like, ‘Shaft’ with Cap and the Falcon.”

So said Markus in an interview with NBC Miami’s Popcorn Biz program.

Fast-forward to July 2012, when it was announced that Mackie was “in negotiations” to star as Falcon, alongside Chris Evans in the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger (to be titled Winter Soldier), which is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (recall that F. Gary Gray was once in the mix to helm the film, but dropped out of contention to focus on the NWA biopic).

Stan Lee introduced Falcon in Captain America #117 (September 1969),calling him “the first African American superhero.

The character, Sam Wilson, is Harlem-based and had many street adventures with Cap in the 1970s comics, when he served as his partner. In current comics, Falcon is a key player in many of Cap’s espionage adventures.

His superhero abilities include: an empathic link with his pet falcon, has the ability to see through the eyes of nearby birds, can fly, is skilled in martial artist, and is a gymnast.

Winter Soldier will center heavily on the apparent resurrection of Bucky Barnes, played in Captain America: The First Avenger by Sebastian Stan.

As MTV notes:

In the comics, Bucky resurfaces in the form of a brainwashed Russian assassin known as the Winter Soldier, and it’s up to his old partner and friend Steve Rogers to bring him back to the side of the angels. Exactly how faithful the Marvel Studios film plans to stick to that source material remains to be seen, but actor Chris Evans insists that the seeds for “Winter Soldier” were planted long ago.

And how involved will Falcon be in the story? That remains to be seen as well.

Marvel has set a release date of April 4, 2014

Forget about casting. The character treatment of the Falcon in the comics when he debuted was a tragic misuse of a black character. After they bring him online and introduce him they decide that a strong black character of moral rectitude was too much to bear so they turned him into a mindless puppet and a stooge of the Red Skull. Made the man a traitorous spy and a Judas and a communist with a pimp and hustler checkered past. They just pissed all over the character and took a major dump on the young black male audience of comic book readers. The righteous readers (mostly black males) turned their backs on the character. So I still have reservations about the movie and the character no matter what they do with it. Once you piss on me and tell me it's raining I don't believe in anything you have to say going forward. Fuck the Falcon and the Marvel universe he comes from.

It's not that I don't like and respect Mackie but it's going to be hard to see him in a superhero role. His look just doesn't lend itself to that. There are several black actors who I think do have the look. Mackie is going to have to have to give a performance for the ages to seem convincing. That's going to be tricky since the "Capt. America" movie franchise does not seem to be about dramatic writing and stellar performances. I wish him nothing but the best. It would be nice to see him get leads in strong dramas or quirky independent comedies.

oh noooo. I don't wanna ruin Mackie with this….. darn it!

Not feeling Mackie's casting in this role.

Wow. An April release date. They are pushing this "summer" movie season earlier and earlier.

I like Anthony Mackie but once again he's just the black sidekick he seems to be stuck in supporting film roles. I kind of wish Anthony could get more leading roles like gay drama Brother to Brother. Brother to Brother was an amazing film and it was the breakthrough of Anthony's career.

Falcon is a major Cap sidekick in the comics so he should have a decent amount of screentime. They will probably go with the "Ultimates" Falcon look that has more of a paramilitary feel over "dude in red suit with angel wings". This will be fun.

Oh my…it's a miracle! And he won't have a drinking problem….

I don't know anything about this character, so I can't say whether or not he'll pull it off. Hollywood will probably marginalize his role as much as they can though, considering he's a black man. Captain America will probably end up saving his ass multiple times.

I like Mackie, I hated "Captain America." That said, brotha needs to start doing pushups… *looking at my watch*… NOW!!!

And the news for the day just turned sour. I can only imagine how bad this is gonna be. Somebody please get that brother a proper trainer and teach him how to be intimidating. I still haven't forgiven him for that horrible portrayal of Tupac. They should have gone with an unknown. Smdh.
