The acquisitions derby of the Toronto International Film Festival just gained another player. On Thursday, Exclusive Media launched Exclusive Releasing, a U.S. distribution company that plans to release three or four films per year, mostly acquisitions.
Former Rhino Entertainment president Scott Pascucci will run the new venture as president and COO, while former Paramount Worldwide Acquisitions Group head Matt Brodlie will lead acquisitions. While the new company will focus on theatrical film releases, it also plans to acquire concert films and music docs, experiment with VOD platforms and distribute homegrown Exclusive Media productions.
"The launch of Exclusive Releasing is the exciting and logical next step for Exclusive Media to be involved in all aspects of the filmmaking and distribution of our movies from development through production and into theaters,” said Exclusive Media co-chairmen Nigel Sinclair and Guy East.
The Exclusive Releasing toppers are well positioned to make the most of the company’s broad mandate. Pascucci served as executive producer for Grove Street Productions on Martin Scorsese’s 2011 documentary “George Harrison: Living in the Material World,” which Exclusive Media’s Spitfire Pictures produced, and his history in the music world will serve him in the acquisition of music docs and other alternative content.
As an acquisitions exec who has handled domestic and international releases and local-language productions at Miramax, Paramount and TriStar, Brodlie was responsible for picking up Sundance Film Festival grand jury prize winner “Like Crazy,” low-budget horror flick “The Devil Inside,” international dramas “The Quiet American” and “Rabbit-Proof Fence” and high-grossing doc “Fahrenheit 9/11,” among others.
"Our goal is to assemble a small but diverse slate of excellent films across our targeted release levels,” said Brodlie. “Exclusive is making fantastic films and there are also great projects available in the marketplace looking for new distribution options. We are excited for the upcoming festivals and markets, and we look forward to seeing all of the great filmmakers and producers that we have worked with over the years."
Additional hiring will take place in the coming months.
Now in its fifth year of operation, Exclusive Media has three films in the Toronto program, “End of Watch” (to be released by Open Road), “At Any Price” (Sony Pictures Classics) and “Disconnect” (LD Entertainment).
