Breaking out as the designer and puppeteer on the groundbreaking TV show “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” the career of artist Wayne White has been anything but predictable. But it’s his unique spirit coupled with an aritistic oeuvre distinctly his own that has made him not only a success, but the subject of the documentary “Beauty Is Embarrassing.” But even if the name isn’t familiar to you, or you were too young to know his work on ‘Pee-wee,’ there is one other place you’ve likely witnessed his talents.
White was the man behind the art design work on Smashing Pumpkins‘ seminal video for “Tonight Tonight” directed by “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Ruby Sparks” helmers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. And in this exclusive clip from the documentary, we get to see White hilariously give his raw and unfiltered opinion of what he really thinks about the MTV Music Video Awards, as well Dayton/Faris discussing why they decided to work with White. It’s a great little snippet from a film that we called “a genuinely hilarious film” and “a joyous romp.”
“Beauty Is Embarrassing” opens this Friday, September 7th. Check out the official website for more details and watch the clip below.
