‘Game of’ What? Terry Brooks’ ‘Shannara’ Fantasy Series Being Adapted For Television

'Game of' What? Terry Brooks' 'Shannara' Fantasy Series Being Adapted For Television

If HBO can adapt George R. R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones" and the novels following it to the small screen and have the result both look good and be taken seriously, then other fantasy series adaptations were bound to follow. Variety is reporting that Terry Brooks' "Shannara" books have been acquired for a potential TV adaptation by Sonar Entertainment in partnership with Farah Films, with Brooks to serve as an executive producer.

Set in the far future, after civilization has been destroyed in a series of wars, leaving the planet in a medieval state in which magic has become possible and there are elves, trolls, dwarves and such, the Shannara books are fantasy with a touch of sci-fi. Brooks has written around two dozen novels set in the universe, 20 of which have ended up bestseller lists, so this material is not short on fans. The TV adaptation would begin being based on the second novel in the original trilogy, "The Elfstones of Shannara" (first published in 1982).

A film adaptation of "Shannara," planned to start with the same book, was in the works at Warner Bros. for years, with Mike Newell at one point attached to direct. The company's hold on the rights ultimately expired, freeing up Brooks to pursue this TV version, which will be shopped around to networks once a showrunner and director are locked in. You can expect more swords and sorcery on a small screen near you soon.

Hast the wizzard

There are already a few Discworld series. IIRC two of the books about Death have been animated (Soul music and Hogfather) as well as Wyrd sisters. And Colour of magic and Going postal have been made into live action TV show.

I'm guessing that the reason they didn't do the first book is because Peter Jackson already made Lord of the Rings. :-) Smarmyness aside I think an adaptation of the Amber series could be interesting as well.

Okay, now we've got 'Game of Thrones' and 'Shannara'. But when do we finally get a 'Discworld' TV Series with the adventures of all the great Discworld characters?
