'Mr. Sophistication,' 'Alaskaland,' 'Benji' (Among Others) To Be Screened at Chicago International Film Fest

The Chicago International Film Festival, which runs from October 11-25, announced their official schedule yesterday; and among the dozens of films which will be presented at this year’s festival, are several that will, no doubt, be of interest to readers at S & A.

Director Danny Green’s feature film Mr. Sophistication starring Harry Lennix, which we profiled over a year ago (HERE) will be presented.

The film deals with, as we said, “a comedian, Ron Waters, who is a Richard Pryor-type of entertainer who makes commentary about the world rather than one-liners. After a self-imposed exile from Hollywood, Ron is back.”

Green, Lennix and the producers of the film Albena Dodeva and Jon Edwards will be presemt for the screening.

Another film worth mentioning is the documentary Benji by the directing team of Coodie & Chike, about Chicago high school senior Ben Wilson, who, back in 1984, was not only a legend as a basketball high school player, but considered one of the greatest players ever and certainly destined for NBA glory, until he was shot and killed one day on his way home.

Also of note is Chinonye Chukwu’s Alaskaland which has been featured on S&A several times already, the most recently by Tambay (HERE), and the director will be in attendance as well.

Other films (all of them we have profiled previously on S & A) to be screened at the festival are:

Otelo Burning  (Dir. Sara Blecher), An Oversimplification of Her Beauty (Dir. Terence Nance), Tchoupitoulas (Dirs. Bill and Turner Ross), The Central Park Five (Dirs. Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, David McMahon), Tey (Dir. Alain Gomis) and War Witch (Dir. Kim Nguyen).

Below are the trailers for Mr. Sophistication, Benji and Alaskaland.
