Cutter Hodierne's award-winning short film, Fishing Without Nets (a film we've covered a lot of this site), which won the Grand Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking at this year's Sundance Film Festival, is on its way to becoming a feature length film (most recently, we announced that it was one of 15 projects selected to recieve a total of $200,000 in grants as part of the Cinereach Project at the Sundance Institute).
As a recap, the short version of Fishing Without Nets centers on a naïve and desperate young Somali man who is coerced to join a band of local pirates as they embark upon a hijacking, but instead of the riches he was promised, he finds mayhem and chaos as his reward.
As for the feature film version, here's the deal, via press release:
Los Angeles, CA (September 11, 2012) – Production is set to commence this month in East Africa on FISHING WITHOUT NETS, written and directed by Cutter Hodierne in his feature film debut. The feature is based on the short film of the same title, which was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Starring a cast of Somali refugees and former hostages, FISHING WITHOUT NETS is a story of pirates in Somalia, told from the perspective of the pirates.
VICE, the youth media brand, is producing and marketing FISHING WITHOUT NETS in conjunction with partner THINK Media Studios. The feature-length will be the first in a series of films VICE will produce and finance in the coming months.
The team who produced the short – Raphael Swann, John Hibey, and Cutter Hodierne – are returning as producers and have partnered with Ben Freedman and Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) of Picture Farm, along with Victor Shapiro.
VICE’s Eddy Moretti and Shane Smith will act as Executive Producers alongside THINK Media Studios’ Joe LoConti. Brian Glazen and Stephanie Pinola of THINK Media Studios will serve as producers. WME Global assembled financing for the film and represents Worldwide Rights.
"FISHING WITHOUT NETS is a rare opportunity to look inside the world of pirating in Somalia in a human story told with authenticity and humanity. Cutter is a remarkably talented young director with the ability to capture the real life drama behind the newspaper headlines," said Chief Creative Officer Eddy Moretti. "This is exactly the kind of project VICE is excited to be involved in, and it’s the first of a series of films VICE will produce and finance in the coming months."
“I couldn’t be happier teaming up to make the feature with a company as innovative as VICE. There is so much the world doesn’t know about piracy in Somalia and the people involved, and I’m excited to be telling a story of piracy in Somalia from a different perspective,” said director Cutter Hodierne. “I can’t wait to make this movie.”
The short film, FISHING WITHOUT NETS, has been hailed for its epic cinematography and intimate, humanizing portrayal of a world rarely seen by outsiders. In addition to it honors at Sundance, the film recently earned the Cinedigm Jury prize at The Wrap’s ShortList festival, and has screened at the Seattle International Film Festival, Rooftop Films, Abu Dhabi Film Festival, and will soon be embarking on a 17-city tour as part of the Sundance Institute Art House Project Shorts Program.
