Rooftop Films Reveals 2012 Filmmakers’ Fund Recipients (Shaka King, Talibah Newman Make The Cut)

Congrats to Shaka King and Talibah Newman – two filmmakers whose work we’ve profiled here on S&A in the recent past. Both are 2012 Rooftop Films fund grantees for Newlyweeds (King’s feature film – photo above) and Sweet Honey Chile’ (Newman’s short film).

The details (along with the rest of this year’s winners) follow via press release below:

(New York, NY) September 18, 2012: Rooftop Films announces 2012 Filmmakers’ Fund grantees with 12 grants, including a new $10,000 cash award from AT&T, plus grants from DCTV, Eastern Effects, Edgeworx Studios and the Adrienne Shelly Foundation.

Rooftop Films not only exhibits films from around the world, we also collaborate with the filmmakers whose work we screen to make new movies through the Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund and Production Collective. At our annual festival, one dollar of every ticket sold is set aside for the future productions of filmmakers whose work we’ve screened. We also grant production services and mentorship by working with local partners Edgeworx Studios, Eastern Effects, The Adrienne Shelly Foundation, DCTV, plus a new grant from our presenting sponsor, AT&T.

Rooftop Films’ Founder and Artistic Director, Mark Elijah Rosenberg, said of the grants: “We would not be able to make the Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund grants without the support of our community—our audience and our sponsors—so it’s wonderful to be able to represent the diversity of that community with a wide range of films this year, ranging from comedies and animation to serious films addressing global political issues. Each of these filmmakers previously screened at our festival, so it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to give something back to them and help them make new films which will sure to make a big impact in the near future.”
