Steve Harris, Naturi Naughton, Lela Rochon Headline Regina King's 'Let The Church Say Amen'

As we already know, Regina King will make her feature film directorial debut, adapting Reshonda Tate Billingsley‘s 2005 novel Let The Church Say Amen for BET.

Queen Latifah‘s Flava Unit is onboard to produce a project that will be one of the first BET original movies for BET, along with Regina King, and Roger Bobb.

Reina King (sister of Regina) is executive producing; Actress/writer Crystal Garrett is adapting the novel to screenplay.

According to Black Film, Steve Harris, Naturi Naughton, Lela Rochon, Hosea Sanchez, and Collins Pennie have all been cast in the BET original film adaptation of Reshonda Tate Billingsley‘s novel.

Here’s a description of the novel:

Reverend Simon Jackson has always felt destined to lead and he’s done a good job of it, transforming his small Houston church into one of the most respected and renowned in the region. But while the good Reverend’s been busy tending his flock, his family’s gone astray. His nineteen-year-old daughter, Rachel, gives new meaning to “baby mama drama.” Crazy in love with her son’s father, she’s wreaking havoc on the man’s life, even though he’s about to marry another woman. David, Simon’s oldest at twenty-seven, has been spiraling downward ever since a knee injury ended a promising football career. These days he’s seeking solace in drugs — even feeding his habit by stealing church offerings. Blessedly, twenty-three-year-old Jonathan, a college graduate and the apple of Simon’s eye, is poised to take his father’s side as associate pastor — or so everyone thinks. Loretta has been a devoted wife to Simon, but she’s beginning to realize that enabling him to give more to the church than to his children was her biggest mistake. As things begin to fall apart and secrets are revealed, will Loretta be able to help her husband reunite their tattered family before it’s too late?

Obviously a lot going on there.

Harris will play Rev Simon Jackson; Naughton will play Rachel; Sanchez will play David; Pennie will play Jonathan; and Rochon will play Loretta.

Shooting begins this month in Atlanta.

If you’ve read the novel, your thoughts on these casting choices?

glad lela rochon is acting. she totally stopped after she had kids. disappointed but i get that her kids come first. she was fantastic in 'mr & mrs loving'.

@mrfriendly/dc kirkwood : Roger Bobb is producing adn he worked with tyler perry so maybe that is why you both feel this is another 1 sided view of the church ?

D.C. Kirkwood

Thank you Mr. Friendly. Ive said this a million times there are so many stories that can be told about black people outside the church. I so wish as a Christian they wouldn't box us in all the time telling these same tired stories. We complain and talk about Tyler Perrys movies then we go regurgitate the same thing but we call it something different. I guess what I'm saying is change the characters and career fields atleast to reflect the diversity in the Christian church. These stories are narrow minded and one sided. If you go to Walmart there is an entire collection dedicated to bootleg dvds, cheaply made, telling these same stories.Next!!

Mr. Friendly

This cast is TIRED TIRED TIRED. Where's the freshness? Where's the new faces? Good luck to Regina K but DAMN this has tired-ass dvd written all over it.
