XLrator Media has acquired all U.S. rights to the Norwegian supernatural thriller “Thale,” written and directed by Aleksander L. Nordaas. The film, which played the SXSW Film Festival in March, will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival Wednesday night in the Vanguard section. XLrator plans an early 2013 release.
Silje Reinåmo, Jon Sigve Skard, Erlend Nervold, Morten Andresen, Sunniva Lien and Roland Åstrand star in the story of a mythical “huldra” — a beautiful, tailed female forest creature — that two crime scene cleaners discover confined to a concealed cellar. Bendik Heggen Strønstad produced under his Yesbox Productions banner; Gudrun Giddings, Tore Fredrik Dreyer and Lars Andreas Hellebust are executive producers.
“‘Thale’ is a haunting and atmospheric thriller that grips you from the opening scene to the chilling finale,” said XLrator CEO Barry Gordon. “It once again shows Scandinavia to be a rich wellspring for today’s most compelling and stylish thrillers, from ‘Let the Right One In’ to ‘Troll Hunter’ to ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ and its sequels.”
Gordon negotiated the deal with Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films and Gudrun Giddings and Kim H. Swartz of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP. Epic Pictures is handling international sales.
XLrator Media has recently released “Ironclad,” “John Carpenter’s The Ward,” “Bunraku,” “Knuckle” and “Assassin’s Bullet.” The company picked up domestic rights to the military thriller “Allegiance” on Monday.
