Weekend B.O. Sept.28-30 ('Transylvania' Rises To the Top; 'Back Down' Flunks Very Badly)

Not surprisingly, the Sony animated film Hotel Transylvania did extremely well this weekend. But then again, almost all animated films, especially those voiced by big name stars, tend to do well at the box office. Parents need something to take their kids to, no matter how mediocre.

Meanwhile, the sci/fi action film Looper did solid business; and the police drama End of Watch, which actually wound up being the No.1 film last weekend, when all the numbers came inheld up very strong in its second weekend.

By the way, Looper, which is partially set in Shanghai, opened to the No.1 position this weekend in China, making some $25 million this weekend. It’s all about the global market folks.

And Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is also doing well, making over $9.6 million so far, in about 850 theaters.

However, Won’t Back Down was a total bust, not even earning $3 million in just over 2500 theaters. Evidently, there was something about it that drove people away.

And Dredd is dead in the water.

Please do not perpetuate the misconception that the voices of celebrities is what brings folks to a theater to see an animated film. The second sentence above is more accurate. This was the only kids film to premiere last weekend so the likelihood of it doing well, due to a lack of competition, was high. Also, Dredd looked dreadful and Won't Back Down, as others have noted, had several issues even before the film rolled: the glib title, the overly familiar storyline that looked too t.v.-like and on-the-nose and bad timing; we're in an era where teachers are being unfairly blamed for ALL of the failures of public schools. It's time to acknowledge that NO STAR today can regularly bring out an audience (see Jonny Depp and Robert Downey, Jr.) so any suggestions that Davis and Gyllenhaal are to blame or that other actresses could've pulled in an audience are erroneous. Star power is dead. It's the Age of Ideas and Hollywood still hasn't figured that out.


Maybe if Coolio or Club Nouveau had been available for the soundtrack?


The first time I saw an ad for it I thought "Lifetime Movie", I don't care for Lifetime movies.


I will not blame Maggie or Viola on this one. They just picked a subject that people are SICK and TIRED of hearing about-blaming teachers for bad schools. We never see the parents and kids that don't care about education. We never see the communities that don't support education and yes there are quite a few. Stop being so one sided all this film does is encourage more programs like NCLB (FAILED) and charter schools that steal the good kids and leave public schools with the bad ones. All while taxpayers foot the bill.


Meryl Streep can make money at the box office in a bad movie (The Iron Lady) but not Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Won't back Down).


I am still trying to figure out WON'T BACK DOWN. It is not that it was expected to do well, but as you put it, it seems to have "drove people away." Clearly Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis had no ability to attract an audience, but it must be something more than that. My best guess, is that at least from the marketing the film had no sense of humor, and seemed to offer no excitement. I don't want to believe that "positive" subject matter is death at the box office. I am curious to hear what others think.
